Strategic interest for China in the Funan Canal in Cambodia

The Funan Canal has very limited economic interest for Cambodia, contrary to the propaganda of the Hun family regime which presents it as "vital" for our country. This propaganda aims to hide the strategic interest of this canal for China, which will provide financing and take control of it for 50 years.

The canal will provide Beijing with a continuous waterway, uninterrupted from southern China to the Gulf of Thailand, passing through Laos and Cambodia, but avoiding Vietnam which must be bypassed.

The waterway will be suitable for transporting goods, including weapons and ammunition, from China to the Gulf of Thailand.

The outlet of the canal is just a stone's throw away from the Chinese military base in Ream, also located in Cambodian territory.

To complete this water section of the Belt and Road Initiative, China will undertake infrastructure works (dams, reservoirs, and locks) to make the Mekong River navigable along its entire length. This will allow boats to bypass waterfalls at certain points in Laos and in Cambodia’s Stung Treng province.
