Japan-Cambodia Leaders’ Video Conference

On December 1, Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, held a video conference with Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HUN SEN, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia for approximately 35 minutes from 10:30 a.m. The overview of the conference is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida stated that he would like to work together with Prime Minister Hun Sen for the success of the ASEAN-related meetings that Cambodia chairs next year. In response, Prime Minister Hun Sen conveyed his message of congratulation to Prime Minister Kishida on his appointment as Prime Minister and stated that he would like to work closely together with Prime Minister Kishida as the ASEAN chair.
  2. The two Prime Ministers exchanged views on the future of Japan-Cambodia relations. Prime Minister Kishida stated that next year is the 30th anniversary of the PKO in Cambodia, and that he would like to take this opportunity to strengthen defense exchanges. Prime Minister Hun Sen concurred with the views of Prime Minister Kishida and expressed his gratitude for Japan's contribution to Cambodia, especially for the additional provision of approximately 300,000 doses of vaccine and other support in the fight against COVID-19.
  3. The two Prime Ministers had a candid discussion on regional issues, and consented to continue to cooperate for contributing to global and regional peace and prosperity under the idea of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" and work together on North Korean issues including the abduction issues. Regarding the situation in Myanmar and the South China Sea issues, both Prime Ministers consented to work together more closely, considering that Cambodia serves as the ASEAN chair next year.
  4. Furthermore, the two Prime Ministers shared the view to cooperate toward the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Cambodia as well as the 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation in 2023.
