King Baldwin IV: Come forward. I am glad to meet Godfrey's son. He was one of my greatest teachers. He was there when, playing with the other boys, my arm was cut. It was he, not my father's physicians, who noticed that I felt no pain. He wept when he gave my father the news... that I am a leper. The Saracens say that this disease is God's vengence against the vanity of our kingdom. As wretched as I am, these Arabs believe that the chastisement that awaits me in hell is far more severe and lasting. If that's true, I call it unfair. Come. Sit.
King Baldwin IV: [Baldwin chuckles] When I was sixteen, I won a great victory. I felt in that moment I would live to be a hundred. Now I know I shall not see thirty. None of us know our end, really, or what hand will guide us there. A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power. When you stand before God, you cannot say, "But I was told by others to do thus," or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice. Remember that.
2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children,(B) you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.(C) 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.(D) 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.(E)
12 What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.
23 Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like(W) a king who wanted to settle accounts(X) with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[h] was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay,(Y) the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold(Z) to repay the debt.
30 But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.
I wonder if some of the confusion here comes from the 2 judgments that God will make of all people. The first is the judgement that you describe above: faith in Christ as savior or rejection of him. This is the judgement that determines salvation or examination. Many Christians tragically neglect the other judgment, where God rewards the elect who persevered, bore much good fruit in the kingdom and proved to be good and faithful stewards of the gifts God has entrusted to them. As democratic and egalitarian as we would like heaven to be, it does seem like there will be a hierarchy (albeit a perfect system where each member will lead and be led in total holiness).
Thanks for posting this and the two articles. I casually mentioned the interchangeable nature of the two phrases in an online discussion somewhere, and was jumped all over by followers of a certain teacher, considered sacrosanct, who then led down this same path in the email above.
No problem. That is the way I see it as well. The New Testament teaches that there will be a gradation of eternal rewards but disinheritance takes it too far. I also see the doctrine of rewards as the linkage that resolves the tension between grace and works. By grace we are saved, by works (empowered by the Holy Spirit) will be rewarded.
This has been amazing. Thanks to you all. I am a new and baby Christian. Several months ago I had a life changing experience. Later my wife and I joined a good church and a few months ago we were baptized. We have been reading our Bibles(ESV student Bible) and seeking Bible teachers and learning a lot. We found many to include Mr. Missler and now Mr. Heiser. Mr. Heiser, could you please recommend some materials for thirsty beginners covering the basics and essentials for my wife and I? Thank you.
Minds wander, and mine was doing such a thing one day when it struck me that Cinderella sets forth a perfect little parable for the kingdom of heaven. Perhaps the quintessential fairytale, Cinderella has been told and re-told countless times since the 17th century. There are beautiful, masterful storybook adaptations and brilliant film adaptations (I am, of course, speaking about the 1950 and 2015 versions). It is a tale beloved across cultures and understood in varying degrees from young to old. While the simple message of goodness being ultimately rewarded is necessary and lovely and true, maybe we can uncover even more.
The story, of course, does not end here. (If it did, it likely would not have made it past the original telling.) A delightful, magnanimous woman with every ounce of maternal care and who has the magical means of obtaining precisely what it is that Cinderella needs, descends upon the scene, and bibbidi-bobbidi-boo! The poor orphan girl is off to the palace, arrayed in a stunningly elegant gown and glass slippers. You know the rest: the perfectly tidy fairytale ending in which good triumphs over evil, and the lowly girl wins the heart of the prince, who loves her with the purest love.
The greatest truth is that the Lord longs for us. He desires that we be in his palace. Armed with (and in awe of!) this knowledge, it is our role to set to work, preparing ourselves for him. We will fail, but we will hope in his mercy and his joy in transforming us into princesses fit for the kingdom. Like Cinderella, our feeble attempts will be metamorphosed into glory if we only desire and persist.

Mantel - Holy Spirit covering/spiritual clothing (like that of a garment) application that comes upon a person endowed with dunamis and is shown by Glory-like-radiance coming off and out of a person. The mantel is more confirmation to the election and gifts abiding with a person. This is my best way to define this word.
Salvation - Greek - sotria deliverance from danger, slavery, or imprisonment; is deliverance from sin and its spiritual consequences and admission to eternal life with blessedness in the kingdom of Christ.
Elect - Greek - eklektos select, favorite, chosen. By implication meaning chosen, with the accessory idea of kindness, favor, love, equivalent to cherished, beloved. The chosen of God for salvation or as members of the kingdom of Heaven, and who therefore enjoy his favor and lead a holy life in communion with Him.
Born Again - kingdom of Heaven defines this for us Messiah- Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Abba defines to prophet Ezekiel in 36:25-27 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. Moreover I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my Statutes and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. Holy Spirit then fulfills the function in this ordinance set by Messiah in John 16:8-14 and in Acts of the apostles 2:4.
Church - Greek - Ekklēsia a calling out, a popular meeting especially a religious congregation (Jewish Synagogue, or Christian Community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both) assembly of Christians.
The kingdom is so involved in our administration of its government that each graced us with the gifts of ministry and the functions of the gifts. The Form of the Government of the kingdom of Abba is shown in its administration of the gifts and Spiritual gifts. Abba father gave us these gifts of rank/position in 1Corinthians 12:28, Holy Spirit give us the manifestations of His graces in 1 Corinthians 12:7 Christ gave us these ministry gifts in Ephesians 4:11.
The apostle is the bonded servant to Abba Father birthed out of the Spirit of Wisdom (Matthew 11:49), being the first official ministerial installation to bring forth the foundations of the gospels of Messiah and is sent to the lost in leadership and/or the body to bring them into a solid base on the kingdom. These gifts are purposed and given governmental authority to assist the body by teaching and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom by demonstration and power under authority, to instruct those out of the way through administration by way knowledge, understanding and expanding the government as one of His ranking ambassadors that administers protocols to living and the blueprints by grace. Apostles do not function as pastors to the church of Christ. Christ reveals His instruction for the purpose of those disciples into apostles walk in Matthew 10:5-15.
Prophets according to scripture as well as apostles are bonded servants birthed from the Spirit of Wisdom. Prophets function from the throne room of Abba Father as His kingdom oracle and eyes on behalf of Father in the land. They too are sent to Form and functions differentiate between such functioning gifts. We all are members grafted to the vine and each has our purpose to function in the kingdom. If you are one who is called into one of these offices I will begin to open up your understanding. The called is two-fold because those who have been into the kingdom to receive salvation and from that moment those who have been called into a special work by election of Christ. God calls who He wills for the specific purpose to get out of a things the form and function for what he not only imparted but grace instilled. I will recall our best example Chief Apostle Messiah who lived out servant-hood as the Son of God through the kingdom ministry function offices of: apostle, prophet, evangelist, teacher, pastor, grace, exhorts, giving, service (ministry), leadership, mercy, prophecy and love. Their functions come out of the instruction directly from Abba Father, Holy Spirit throughout the scriptures.
