Greetings DBH community members:

I hope this message finds you all well!

As we continue to build our community here on the SAMHSA DTAC DBH Google Group, I wanted to take a moment to extend a warm invitation to all members, new and old, to introduce yourselves and share a little bit about what brings you to this space.

Feel free to tell us about your professional background or current role, where you are located, or anything else you'd like us to know! And if you're on LinkedIn, include your profile link so we can connect beyond this group.

Inspired by a recent conversation with other DBH professionals where it was revealed many of us are avid readers, I'd like to kick off a fun activity called "What's on Your Shelf?" We all have that one book (or maybe a few!) that left a lasting impression on us, inspired us, or simply brought us joy. So, why not spread the love?

Take a moment to recommend a book that you've enjoyed recently or in the past. Whether it's related to DBH or not, fiction, non-fiction, self-help, or even a cookbook, we'd love to hear about it! Don't forget to share a brief summary or why you think others might enjoy it too.

Below are responses from a few members of the SAMHSA DTAC Team:

Alexandra (Xani) Podolny

www.linkedin.com/in/alexandrapodolny

Frederick, MD

Deputy Director, SAMHSA DTAC

Book recommendation: The Displacements, A Novel, by Bruce Holsinger. A privileged Miami family is swept up in the world’s first category 6 hurricane, and faces losing everything. Realistic disaster setting, interesting storytelling devices, and compelling characters!

Rockville, MD

Director, SAMHSA DTAC

Book recommendation: This is How You Lose the Time War, by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. A dense sci-fi novel told through letters between two enemy agents who slowly create a connection and form a bond that could change the universe. This book reads almost like poetry and the sci-fi elements are truly unique.

Frederick, MD

Technical Assistance Specialist, SAMHSA DTAC

Book recommendation: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Set in the early 1960s, a female chemist in an all-male research institute pushes back against equality, falls in love, and with the unpredictability of life finds herself a single mother, and becomes America’s most beloved cooking show host. The lead character is unusual, direct, intelligent, funny, and dares other women to change the status quo. While this is also a Netflix limited series, reading the book is much more fun and entertaining! Another recommendation is Baking Yesteryear by B. Dylan Hollis. Recipes from the 1900s to the 1980s with a little bit of everything included. Some recipes will have you questioning the ingredient combination while other recipes will be familiar from days gone by. The potato chip cookie recipe is a must.

Materials Development Lead, SAMHSA DTAC

Book recommendation: Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan. This book is one of the best I’ve read in years. It’s a novella about a man in Ireland in the 1980s who is faced with a decision about what to do when he finds out that a Magdalen laundry is being run out of the Catholic parish where he lives. Keegan tends to show rather than tell, so reading feels like being in someone else’s life, and her descriptions are extremely evocative. The story, which is short, is also really well-constructed—it feels as though you could look into every detail and it would have a reason for being as it is (and when I’ve thought some of these details through, that is what I’ve found—all the small details contribute to the whole story)

Let's make this group a vibrant community where we can connect and learn from one another.

Looking forward to learning more about our members and their book recommendations!

Best,

The SAMHSA DTAC Team

Book Recommendation:   The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons, Sam Kean travels through time with stories of neurological curiosities: phantom limbs, Siamese twin brains, viruses that eat patients' memories, blind people who see through their tongues. He weaves these narratives together with prose that makes the pages fly by, to create a story of discovery that reaches back to the 1500s and the high-profile jousting accident that inspired this book's title.

Hello everyone!

Skip Zimmerman here.

I’m in Albany, NY and run the Disaster Mental Health program for the state.

My favorite and most timeless book is one called “Orbiting the Giant Hairball: A Corporate Fool’s Guide to Surviving with Grace” written by Gordon MacKenzie and published by Viking.  It takes a robust and refreshing approach to preserving creativity when that might be viewed as in conflict with corporate pressures to perform against financial objectives.  Suitable for any organization where policies, objectives and creativity clash.

It’s great to meet all of you!

Hello Everyone!

What a fun process.  I'm loving all the good book recommendations.  I've got 5 already on my to-read list and am in the middle of 3.

Identifying a Best Book is impossible.  So let's go with some recent favs:

The Hyperion Series (Cantos) - by Dan Simmons - This is Sci Fi dealing with AI, Religion and individual freedom. The twists and turns are incredible throughout the 4 book series.

Behave: The Biology of Humans at our Best and Worse by Robert Sapolsky (Non-Fiction) - Best wholist few of human behavior I've ever read - and actually an easy read.

From Strength to Strength by David Brooks - Non-Fiction Selfhelp:  A great few of the maturation process and how our strengths change between the first half and second half of our professional lives.

Greetings all!

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for book ideas.  I love expanding my antilibrary: "the books on your shelf you haven't read yet, but aspirationally show what you still look forward to learning."  Xani, I have The Displacements waiting for me!

Aimee Voth Siebert (she/her)

I'm the Disaster Behavioral Health and Inclusion Program Manager in the Colorado Dept of Public Health and Environment. For those with long relationships to the disaster behavioral health field, I work with Dr. Curt Drennen.

Two book recommendations:
The End of Trauma: How the New Science of Resilience is Changing How We Think About PTSD (2021) by George A. Bonanno. This should be in the disaster behavioral health canon - it challenges our tendency as a discipline to look for trauma, when, if we looked for resilience, we'd find it much more commonly.  It features the evidence and skills for practicing the flexibility mindset and flexibility sequence as avenues to greater resilience. Full of both collective community stories and stories of individuals to demonstrate how resilience can show up in our lives.

The Parable of the Sower (1993) by Octavia Butler. A speculative fiction novel set in a post-apocalyptic Earth heavily affected by climate change and social inequality. The novel follows Lauren Olamina, a young woman who can feel the pain of others and becomes displaced from her home. Several characters from various walks of life join her on her journey north and learn of a religion she has discovered and titled Earthseed. The main tenets of Earthseed are that "God is Change" and believers can "shape God" through conscious effort to influence the changes around them. (I'm still in the middle of this one, but it is powerful and hauntingly timely in that it begins in the 2020s and tackles the topics like climate change and systemic inequality).

Pleased to connect with everyone and learn about our flexible, imaginative ways to grow disaster behavioral health across the country!

Book Recommendation – The Silo Effect: The Peril of Expertise and the Promise of Breaking Down Barriers, Gillian Tett

  • ISBN13: 9781451644746
  • The Silo Effect asks a basic question: why do humans working in modern institutions collectively act in ways that sometimes seem stupid? Why do normally clever people fail to see risks and opportunities that later seem blindingly obvious? This book uses case studies to explore the problem of why so many organizations still suffer from a failure to communicate and about how our tendency to create functional departments hinders our work.

Hello everyone,

I am the Assistant Director of a community behavioral health agency in Portsmouth, VA.

I have been collecting books since elementary school, Shel Silverstein is a genius and got me hooked on reading at a young age. I recently visited Powell’s bookstore in Portland (the largest used and new bookstore in the world) and was able to find some 1st edition books in their ”Rare Book Room.” I must say, super cool!

A book I highly recommend is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It is a pretty popular book however, I used it a lot with my private practice consumers. It is easy to read (or listen to for free on YouTube) and it really challenges your perspective on how you look at things. We can pout and be upset about things or we can contest the thought and use cognitive reframing to get ourselves back out there because the “universe” or “your inner self” is rooting for you.

P.S. This picture was taken 4 years ago and has since acquired more books.

P.S.S. My goal is to find all of the DSMs and have them in my collection (I have 4 and 5 currently).

Thanks, happy reading everyone 😊
