For Immediate Release:

In Honor Of Black History Month -- consider donating a book, or books through the:

URBAN/STREET LITERATURE

(and other contemporary black genres)

BOOK DRIVE

During the Month of December, bring your gently used (or new if you are feeling really generous) Urban/Street lit books (or other books of the contemporary black genres) to the COLOR BOOK GALLERY, 6353 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia. Also while there, make sure to check out the wonderful selection of children's book in the neighborhood's only bilingual, cultural & educational children's bookstore and cultural showcase.

Book donations benefit Books Through Bars, which is a collective library that sends free books to prisoners based upon their requests. Among the thousands of request the library fills every year, urban fiction (street lit) and other contemporary black fiction genres (including authors such as but not exclusive to: Zane, Terry McMillan, Bebe Moore Campbell, Walter Moseley, Omar Tyree, E. Lynn Harris, etc...), are both the most requested books from inmates and the hardest genres to keep on the Book Through Bars shelves. Hence the objective here. Anyway, all donations through Books through Bars are tax-deductible.

Although the primary focus of this book drive is urban lit and other contemporary black genres, donations of the following gently used books will also be accepted:

  • PAPERBACK dictionaries, thesauri

  • Law books: Black’s Law Dictionary, current PA law, current Federal law

  • How to draw: general/basics, people, animals (drawing/art magazines welcome too)

  • How to draw cartoons and comics

  • Basic math and reading

  • GED and ESL study guides, text books

  • High school textbooks (all subjects)

  • Vocational books: electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.

  • How to start a business (commercial, small, nonprofit)

  • Car, motorcycle: general, maintenance

  • Popular comics: Superman, Batman, etc.
