Dear All;

In less than two weeks, leaders of the world's eight most powerful countries (known as the G8) will meet in Japan. This important summit coincides with the Japanese wish-making festival – called 'Tanabata' where people tie wishes for the future to bamboo trees. By adding your wish to our virtual tree you'll be joining thousands of others in demanding that the G8 make education for everyone a reality - giving the world's poorest citizens a quality education and a decent start in life.

Your action really can make a difference. Last month you asked the European Council to not fall back on aid commitments. We just received the Council's conclusion statement and against expectations, the Council re-committed to the aid targets that we were asking for (0.56% GNI by 2010, and 0.7% GNI by 2015) and had some new text on possible increases in aid to education, as well as drawing up an action plan for getting all children to school! poorest citizens a quality education and a decent start in life.

But let's not be complacent... this commitment has been around since 2005, and we've yet to see warm words turn into hard cash for education. We urgently need this announcement to be followed up by action when the G8 meets two weeks from now in Japan.
