Thank you for the mail.
Nepal is one of the developing countries with a literacy rate of 54% with female literacy rate of 43%. According to the statistics of Department of Education, the NER at primary level is 89% and still 11% of the children have never attended the school.
But, the scenerio is quite different. 32% of the children enrolled at schools in grade one drop out before completing a year. The primary cycle completion rate is only 63%. The major problem seen in school is class room and a trained teachers. Though the phamplets with slogon "Every Child Needs a Teacher" is pested at the walls and office premises, 60000 teachers are needed in Nepal immediately.
In such a horrible and tragic situation how the development agency like European Union can withdraw its hands from investing in education??? The first priority of each states and the development
agencies should be Education!, Education!! and only the Education!!!. The quality education is most for the sustainable development.
Thank you.

Take Action: Don''t let
EU Heads back track on aid and education promises
Education for All can be achieved if the money’s available.
At the forthcoming European Council, the leaders of the EU have the opportunity to make a historic breakthrough on global education, reaffirming their aid commitments and making a specific plan to get children into school and eliminate illiteracy. If they fail to do so, there will be devastating consequences for a generations to come. We need your help to make sure the EU don''t lose their way.
Since 2000 there’s been great progress in education - with over 40 million more children starting school in some of
the poorest countries. Yet progress is not fast enough. There are still 72 million children out of school, 774 million adults who can’t read and write and millions more receiving a poor education because their state can’t afford the costs of education, and to train, recruit and pay the 18 million more teachers needed between now and 2015.
The total external funding needed for EFA is $16 billion. Since 2000 - the year world leaders promised to make EFA a reality - aid to basic education has risen to only around $3 billion per year, leaving an annual gap of $13 billion. Three years ago the EU agreed to increase aid to the poor countries to 0.56% of the annual gross national income (GNI) by 2010, and 0.7% GNI by 2015. If delivered, this would make billions of dollars more available to poor countries to improve and expand their education systems. To date, these promises have not been kept, and the effects have been devastating. It even appears that
some EU member states are now seeking to row back on this commitment – further jeopardising all the gains made in education over the last seven years. This will have a disastrous impact on the lives of millions of the world''s poorest children and adults.
The fact that 774 million adults are illiterate and 72 million children denied the chance to go to school is not acceptable. The world has the power and knowledge to end the scourge of illiteracy. Please take just a moment to make sure that the leaders of the EU stay on track, keep their financial promises and make Education for All a reality.
