This verse suggests one of the greatest reasons for the ministry of tongues. He that speaks in an unknown tongue builds himself up. He that speaks in an unknown tongue helps himself. He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself. We must readily agree that we all are in need of anything that will build us up, cause us to be made stronger and edified in the Lord. This is what the ministry of tongues does in the life of the Spirit-filled believer.
In the middle section of 1 Corinthians 14, Paul explains that for something to edify others, they must understand what is being said, prayed, or sung. If a person does not understand something (for various reasons) then that person is not edified by it, even if the person speaking, singing, praying, etc. is responding to the Spirit in a way that edifies himself.
Yes, Paul said to seek to prophesy because prophecy edifies others by its very nature. Of course, other things can edify others as well. We should focus on those kinds of activities when we are gathered together.
Syntectonic volcanic activities in the sedimentary basins are crucial for understanding the complex interplay of volcanism, tectonism, and basin evolution. The Miocene Eoil Basin in SE Korea, formed during backarc opening of the East Sea, is filled with abundant volcanic deposits intercalated with fluviolacustrine deposits. The volcanic deposits of the basin are divided into two types: poorly degraded volcanic deposits (Paljori Tuff and Eoil Basalt) and highly degraded volcanic deposits (Maegok and Gidu diatremes and Jeonchon tuff cone). The former, basinwide occurrence with sheet-like geometry, is resultant from instant large volcanic material input, and interpreted as results of high-volume eruptions during rift climax of the basin. Because of high basin subsidence and short eruption time of volcanoes, the deposits are rapidly buried by following sedimentary deposits without enough time for degradation, resulting in well-preservation of their initial geometries. Whereas the latter, local occurrence along the basin faults, is interpreted as results of low-volume eruptions during weak and local fault activities, forming vertical edifies (tuff cones/rings). This caused serious degradation of the deposits after deposition and resulting presently in exposure of its subsurface structure (Gidu diatremes) or partial rimbeds (Jeonchon tuff cone). Although the Maegok diatreme formed in the southeastern basin margin during the rift climax, its serious erosion of the deposits is interpreted to be related with its location where continual uplift of the basin floor by post-depositional tilting.
In The Compelling Community, pastors Mark Dever and Jamie Dunlop cast a captivating vision for authentic fellowship in the local church that goes beyond small groups. Full of biblical principles and practical advice, this book will help pastors lead their congregations toward the kind of community that glorifies God, edifies his people, and attracts the lost.
- Preaching is a central part of the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ. The expectation of sound and engaging preaching which inspires and edifies the faithful should be central to every member of the clergy. This workshop will explore the importance of homiletics in the Orthodox Church and how our clergy can be more effective preachers.
