We have started to have discussions about bringing all of our processes into the 12th century and I was wondering if anyone can point me to examples of Cisco device management using salt. I found some stuff for ansible https://docs.ansible.com/ansible/ios_config_module.html that looks interesting. However, before I start down that road, I want to see if salt has something like it. I appreciate any information.

Regards,
Brandon

Hi Brandon,

me personally? Not yet.

But if you haven't seen it check out this talk by Mircea Ulinic:
"Network Automation with Salt and NAPALM*"
https://ripe72.ripe.net/archives/video/121/
*) "Network Automation and Programmability Abstraction Layer with Multivendor support"

There's an extensive README on Github
how to set this up which uses Cisco gear
in its examples:
https://github.com/napalm-automation/napalm-salt/blob/master/README.md

The matrix with supported devices/vendors can be found here:
https://napalm.readthedocs.io/en/latest/support/index.html

And if you're still worried about the
quality of its IOS/IOS-XR support listen to
this interview with the netmiko creator
Kirk Byers who now also contributes to
NAPALM:
http://packetpushers.net/podcast/podcasts/pq-show-99-netmiko-napalm-network-automation/

Best regards, Florian

Although Florian already mentioned NAPALM, I hope that sharing the following resource will provide some help: https://mirceaulinic.net/2016-11-17-network-orchestration-with-salt-and-napalm/

Cheers,
Mircea
