Hi Team,

We want to upgrade salt server os from ubuntu 16 to 18. But during the update it is uninstalling all the salt packages.
Is there any way to upgrade ubuntu without uninstalling salt?

I don't use Ubuntu, but if i had to guess you are upgrading some library mandatory for your version of salt. If there is now upgrade for salt with those new binary, apt will just remove it.

i have no idea what version of salt you are running nor how new/old ubuntu18 is, but my first try would be to replace salt apt repo for something more recent in order to upgrade it with the OS.

This is just a guess but you probably need to update the repo details in /etc/apt/sources.list.d prior to the upgrade.

every salt version repo will always have ubuntu version mentioned. So we cannot add ubuntu 18 repo in ubuntu 16 server. Have already tried with the same but no luck.
Is there any other alternative for the same?

IIRC Ubuntu disables all third party repos as part of the upgrade process.  Typically it leaves 3rd party software installed but in this case there is probably some package that salt for ubuntu 16.04 depends on that isn't present in 18.04 and as a result the package manager is actually removing your salt install.  It should leave your configurations in place so after the upgrade you should be able to re-add the salt repository, reinstall salt for Ubuntu 18.04 and pick up where you left off.  That being said, you might end up upgrading salt versions as well which could complicate things.  Do you know what version of salt you are running on 16.04?  Is that same salt version available for 18.04?

2019.2.2 is the current version. I think this is also available in Ubuntu 18.
