Use SaltStack to run Windows Update?

Hello All,

I have a number of Windows and Mac OS X desktops at work and I'm investigating using SaltStack, 

at first on Windows then on the Macs, to manage updates.

Ideally apt-get would have been ported to both Windows and Mac long ago, but that isn't the world we live in. :(

I have found the WUA_SearchDownloadInstall.vbs script, for Microsoft machines 

This works...kinda. 

But seems to be more kludgey than necessary.

Am I missing some built-in Windows service or Salt module that does the job?

Michael,

We do have a working, if somewhat green, package manager in Salt for Windows. It doesn't currently initiate Windows Updates yet. I think that's a great idea. How would you envision it working? Should it just download and execute all available Windows updates? Should it just set your Windows Updates preferences? (such as whether or not to download and install them automatically, or just download them and notify the user that they're available.)

If you don't mind, if you could open an issue on the Salt github repo we can open a discussion there.

While we're on the topic, it'd be nice to have a wrapper on Mac around softwareupdate (man softwareupdate shows that this is fairly trivial to write).
