Summary Info that Organisers put on Salsaholics delivered by Salsalink

Hi McSalseros. This emailing of Scottish Salsa (info off Salsaholics website) has been going since emails were not long invented. It still goes to 1100 plus folk. But there are now other ways to get your information - e.g. organisers and local websites and email lists and Facebook. Let me know (just reply to this) if you still think this emailing is worth it for you? And, if you do think it's good, you might like to twist your favourite organisers' arms - there's probably a name for that move! - to get them to put stuff on Salsaholics events page more reliably (if they don't). Glasgow in particular seems to look after its own in its own way. But the rest of us miss out on what's going on. Nick

Since Jan 2009, with Graeme Mathieson's help, Salsalink emails summary information that Organisers put on Salsaholics about upcoming Salsa events that have Scotland-wide McSalsero appeal. When Salsalink sends Salsaholics info it is called Salsaholink.

WHO RUNS Salsalink / Salsaholink?

Organisers put the info into Salsaholics. Graeme runs Salsaholics. Nick coordinates Salsalink email list and sending out. So Salsaholink depends on all three together, but most of all: Organisers.

Contact the organiser of an event to feedback about their info or lack of it in Salsaholink. Encourage them to use Salsaholics better. If you are an organiser and want to enter info on Salsaholics but don't know how, contact Graeme at <gra...@salsaholics.org> or Nick at <nick....@virgin.net> Be creative with the "tagline" box.

GETTING Salsalink / Salsaholink

There are over 1100 people on the email list of this Salsalink Google Group. Simplest way to get Salsalink / Salsaholink is to send an empty email to Salsalink...@googlegroups.com, or go to http://www.salsaholics.org and use the "Email List" box there.

OTHER SCOTTISH INFO SERVICES

Salsaholics is THE website for Scotland's Salsa information at: http://www.salsaholics.org. Try it's Links page too. That is the best place for up-to-date comprehensive info about Salsa Classes across Scotland - you can ask for info by teacher, place and day-of-week. Lots of McSalseros are now on facebook which makes for a more personal friendly network and way to be reminded of events.

HISTORY

Salsalink began like this: A personal freelance email list grew out of a printed non-Salsa Edinburgh dancers phone contact list in January 1998 – we couldn't get even a handful of people together to go dancing over the 1997 festive season lull! Salsa dancers got added in 1999. Emailing slowly grew alongside. On 1st April 2001 the first named Latinburgh Newsletter was sent out. 2003 renamed the Newsletter to become just Latinburgh but the edition number continued. Given the pros and cons of more local versus Scottish e-newsletters, we went Scottish during 2003. Recognising this and covering Salsa rather than "Latin", we renamed ourselves Salsalink for 2004. In June 2004, Rohan Cragg initiated our Salsalink Google Group. The continuing edition number provides a connection with Latinburgh. So the first Salsalink was "No 114". The first Salsaholink in Jan 2009 was "No 184". There is still no formal status or organisation behind Salsalink.

A SCOTTISH SALSA NETWORK

In October 2001, it was useful to create a network of those interested in looking after the overall Salsa scene in Edinburgh. It was called the Edinburgh Salsa Network (ESN). With some meetings and email discussion, it helped firm up the collaboration and the role of email networking via what was then Latinburgh. There has since been no overt need for ESN, but "behind the scenes" people still can co-ordinate and use the Scotland-wide email list for teachers and organisers - for example to share requests or opportunities that help plan classes and events, to develop thinking about complicated issues, to get access codes for Salsaholics website, and to check information before it's sent out. There is therefore still a Scottish Salsa Network running behind Salsalink Salsaholink. It is also now a Google Group. Nick aims to add all teachers and organisers to this list - contact him if you want to be on it too.

People have largely confirmed that there is not a place for a formal membership Salsa Society. Informal email and internet helps connect, publicise integrate and shape up Salsa dance activities around Scotland. The success of the Scottish Salsa Congress has removed any doubts about the strength of our Salsa scene!

Since April 2003, Salsalink has worked more closely together with Graeme and www.salsaholics.org as THE internet website for Scotland's Salsa information. That is our Scottish Salsa scene's "front door" and shop window as advertised in the Metro newspaper in 2003 - an advert that continued several times a week until autumn 2007, even though the payment stopped at Easter 2004!

WORD OF MOUTH

Keep telling every Salsero who doesn't know about it, to get on Salsalink's list. That means new learners especially. There is no other effective publicity of Salsa than by person to person. There are fliers to advertise Salsalink and Salsaholics - ask for some.

CHANGING EMAIL ADDRESSES

If you haven't yet, go to Create an account with Google by clicking Sign in (top right) at https://www.google.com/accounts/ Just because you get the emails, and can read the public home page, doesn't mean you can get by Google's "front door" without joining Google. Use your old email that Google knows you by. Then click on My Account at top right of screen so that, on the left, you can change your email etc to the new one. This will apply in one go to all Google Groups you belong to. Lots of other goodies there too, including Unscubscribing easily.
