Hello Everyone,
I hope CAHSEE testing is going well for everyone!
We will be meeting on Friday in Room 153 at 2:10 - remember the sooner we get started, the sooner we're done :)
Here are a few updates from my meeting with Mr. Whitman this morning.
*A Needs Assessment Committee is being formed from SLC leads, Dept. Chairs, students, parents and some district personnel. The 'Tiger Team' as it is being called (don't ask me why) will be reviewing our WASC accreditation from the last visit, as well as assessing needs and data in order to write the school plan. There will be lots of classroom visits from various people (both from Manual and from the district) on November 11th-November 16. Again, the purpose is to assess needs in and out of the classroom.
*Mr. Whitman would like us to begin identifying the 100 kids from each grade level in SALSA who are most at risk. This can be based on grades, behavior, attendance, etc... I would like to discuss this at our next SLC meeting, please bring at least five names from each grade level who you feel need some immediate intervention.
*Student Council: Mr. Whitman also wants us to begin organizing a 'Student Council' group, separate from the leadership class. The purpose of which is to plan activities and events for students, speak for their fellow students to the district and at school based meetings, and to organize fundraising events to benefit students on campus. It's not terribly different from what Leadership does now, but if I understand Mr. Whitman correctly, he wants more student voices in participation and event planning on campus.
I have a few interested kids, I am also willing to offer some community service hours for kids willing to do a little extra work. I have tried to meet with the kids last week, but we are having scheduling snafu's. I would like to aim for Monday 11/7 at lunch in room 153 for our first official meeting. I need your help to announce this to the kids and get some interested bodies in here.
*Field Trips: we have $3500 for field trips for SALSA. We need to start planning some trips and ordering busses. I would like to take our 12th graders to The Getty for The Pacific Standard Time exhibit about Southern California artists. Other ideas are more than welcome!
*Parent Night: Thursday, November 10, 5-7pm. We officially have the Student Cafeteria. It's time to plan! If Ms. Ramirez and her wonderful students are still up for it, I would like to have light appetizers and snacks for the parents. I would also love to have decorations - we can talk about the details on Friday afternoon, please come to the meeting with ideas. We have money for supplies :)
*Thank you to Ms. Salinas and all the teachers who made the Day of the Dead celebration on October 31st so successful!
*On Friday, we will be discussing Parent Night, SLC identity, and wrapping up with discussing our 100 most at risk kids.
Thanks all!
