Greetings all!
While many of you are members of Shepherd of the Valley here in Salmon, a number of you are not. With that in mind, I wanted to offer a bit of an update--as well as an explanation--as to why the devotions fell silent again this week.
My wife Julie's sister--Tammy--has long fought a particular nasty disease called Still's Disease, and it has just recently put her back in the hospital again. This time, however, things are looking very grim. The problem that put her in the hospital was actually a flesh-eating bacteria, that they now have under control. Unfortunately, that bacteria was only a symptom of a larger problem. The Still's disease which normally results in something very similar to rheumatoid arthritis (Tammy, in her mid-thirties, has had both hips and a shoulder replaced already). In very rare cases, it can attack the bone marrow from within, thus destroying the immune system. That, however, is what is now happening to Tammy.
Tammy is currently hospitalized at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where a team of doctors has been struggling to treat her. On Monday, we received news that, as I already mentioned, was grim. The news worsened on Tuesday. And on Wednesday, I put Julie on a plane in Boise to go be with her sister. The doctors have one last treatment they can try and have already started: chemotherapy. It's a two-edged sword, however, for while it should eliminate that cells attacking her marrow, it remains to be seen whether she can handle it in her weakened condition. If it does not work, there is nothing else to try.
So, here in Salmon, I have it pretty easy--juggling pastor stuff and kids. I just haven't had the time to work on the devotions ( I know you guys understand.) In Rochester and Owatonna, Minnesota (where Tammy and her family live) is where it is hard. So if, in your prayers, you could remember Tammy and her family (husband, Greg, and daughters Mandy-19, Ally-18, & Holly-12), as well as Julie, I would greatly appreciate it.
