DON MIGUEL RUIZ:
THE AGREEMENTS FOR LIFE
 |
| Don Miquel Ruiz on Desire |
Friday, September 13: 7:30pm-9:30 pm
Saturday, September 14: 10am - 5pm
Spectrum Theatre at Artisphere
Rosslyn, VA
Join us for a rare Washington, DC appearance by don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements, a New York Times bestseller for over seven years. He is also the author of The Mastery of Love and The Voice of Knowledge. Don Miguel's message is simple, practical, and changes lives. His four agreements are a code for living.
Agreement 1
Be impeccable with your word - speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
Agreement 2
Don't take anything personally - nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.
Agreement 3
Don't make assumptions - find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
Agreement 4
Always do your best - your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.
The Agreements for Life is a new teaching by don Miguel, full of life-enhancing and relationship-enriching wisdom. He gives it publicly for the very first time when he joins us in September. This work is the capstone of his career, and brings together his teachings and those of his family.

DEVA PREMAL & MITEN and
THE GURUGANESHA BAND in CONCERT
Tuesday, September 24 at 7:30pm
Theatre of the Arts at UDC in Washington, DC
Join worldwide kirtan chart-topping performers Deva Premal & Miten. Opening the concert will be the incomparable GuruGanesha Band. Experience the beauty and bliss of some of the world's sacred mantras during this evening of chanting and song.
In a conversation with LA Yoga Magazine, Deva Premal and Miten were asked:
How do you do what you do? That is...how does the mechanism of your modality, your practice of healing by mantra, work?
"Deva's a translucent channel for the mantras to move through," Miten says. "She was born to her father chanting the Gayatri (mantra). People don't understand the difference between a language that is energetic and a language that is created by the mind."
"The meaning is secondary," Deva says. "The word 'table' is not the table. With Sanskrit, the word 'ananda' is the sound vibration of bliss. In sound, it's the energy of bliss. We have to say bliss... we have to make it smaller by putting it into an English word. Just the sound, ananda... if we were sensitive enough, we'd just feel the entire scope of that energy that's contained in this sound."
Miten sits motionless in a comfortable silence as Deva continues.
"The ancient seers, they help us give the meaning that they perceived when they used these sounds," Deva says. "They kind of made these dialectic formulas where they put these Sanskrit words to go to very specific areas of your life; for a physical healing, or to go into healing relationships. We have almost medicinal formulas of a collection of sounds that are also a collection of words.
"And there are the names of Gods and Deities that all go together. When we sing Ganesha, the sound of Ganesha is the sound of the removing of obstacles, or the sound of unity, but it also helps us to see the form that was created to reflect that energy of removing of obstacles, of unity, or of harmony. It's working on a cellular level. It's much deeper than the mind. It's not a language that you need to understand the meaning of before you use it. It's a deep universal sound code that connects us all."

SPIRITUALITY + EMOTIONS:
AWAKENING TO THE WISDOM OF YOUR HEART
Saturday, October 12
Film Talks Meditation Music
10am - 5 pm
Concert at 7:30 pm
Spectrum Theatre at Artisphere
Rosslyn, VA
Sponsored by the Insight Meditation Community of Washington
This special daylong event featuring
Tara Brach and other teachers explores the power of emotions, and looks at their role in our daily lives. If what we're looking for is peace, serenity and enlightenment, how do we relate to the raw and challenging emotions that arise along the way?
The program features
Joel Lesko and his thought-provoking new film,
"Tears of the Buddha," which provides the inspiration for this event.
The film is being heralded for its serious look at an area of life that is often confusing and problematic for people in spiritual practices.
Are emotions an impediment to higher consciousness and transformation? What about so-called unspiritual emotions like anger and hate? Do emotions trap a seeker in the personal self?
The film questions age-old teachings about emotions and leads to an important conversation about individual selfhood -- is it real, is it an illusion? What's the point of cultivating happiness and good self-esteem if the self doesn't exist?
Joining Tara Brach and Joel Lesko are two teachers featured in the film, Judith Blackstone and Jon Bernie. This daylong program includes the film screening, discussions, meditation, and individual teachings by Tara, Judith and Jon.
Judith Blackstone of Woodstock, NY is an innovative teacher in the spiritual and psychotherapy fields. She developed the Realization Process, a method of realizing fundamental (non-dual) consciousness, and applying it to psychological and physical healing. She has taught it for 25 years throughout the United States, including at the Esalen Institute in California. She is on the faculty of The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology and SUNY Empire State College.
Jon Bernie of San Francisco is a spiritual teacher focused on the unfolding of natural wakefulness - the already enlightened basic state that lies at the core of human experience. He has four decades of practice and study in the contemplative traditions of Soto Zen, Theravada Insight Meditation and Advaita Vedanta. He was an early student of Jack Kornfield. In addition to his work as a spiritual teacher, Jon is also an experienced healer and teacher of somatic embodiment via his extensive training in the Alexander Technique, the Qigong system of Dr. Yu Penxi, and the Zero Balancing system of Dr. Fritz Smith.
The day concludes with a concert by Carrie Newcomer, a gifted singer and songwriter with deep roots in the spiritual path. Carrie's music explores the intersection of the spiritual and the daily, the sacred and the ordinary. She has become a prominent voice for progressive spirituality, social justice and interfaith dialogue. Her talent for sharp observation of the world led the Dallas Morning News to say, "She's the kind of artist whose music makes you stop, think, and then say, 'that is so true.'"
