Thegangsters of the past are no more. The wise guys got too wise, and the reach of criminal enterprises has gone beyond the strictly criminal. Bowler hats and tommy guns have been exchanged for briefcases and ties.

In writing my novel, The Don of Siracusa I delved into the world of corporate corruption and tried to contrast that against the incredibly complex modern structures of Italian American organized crime. In doing so, I took inspiration from the many books, fictional or otherwise, that span the mafia crime genre.

Roberto Saviano is considered a hero, and also a target, in Italy for this work of investigative nonfiction, delving deep into the world of the Camorra crime syndicate. An absolute must read for any with even the slightest interest in modern organized crime. While the novel provides incredible insight to the violence and corruption that the clan produces, the television series of the same name has been the subject of criticism for humanizing gangsters.

Perhaps surprisingly to the uninitiated, the mafia protagonists never give up their illegal, often immoral, lifestyles; instead, their love interest understands and adjusts to living on the criminal side. On-page murder, violence, and various other usually unheroic elements are understood and expected. (Consider this a content warning!)

The following is a list of some of the best dark mafia romance books. They have some of the most brutal, possessive, and alluring mafia protagonists found in romance, where a happy ever after is, nevertheless, always guaranteed.

The Born in Blood Mafia Chronicles starts off with Bound by Honor; later, Luca Vitiello came out as a prequel, creating a mini duology within the series that tells the romance from separate viewpoints.

The two enter into a fake engagement, allowing him to get close to her father, the Don. But even though the set-up is different, the critical elements remain: an alphahole protagonist, steamy scenes, and dangerous encounters of all sorts.

I am not an organized person. I write what I feel like writing, when I want to write it. I've had to change some titles because the books were being suppressed or some other reason that seemed really important at the time. That's created a bit of a mess. I'll try to put some ducks in a row here.

A lot of these can be read out of order, but I've listed them the way you can read in the order published. The Drazen books, in particular, have an unconventional linear timeline. Reading in the order published is still the best way to go about it.

I've listed relevant subgenres and tropes under the series name. This can look reductive, but if you're looking for a certain story you know you read, but can't recognize the title, you're going to appreciate the verbal economy. In cases where I drove the genre train off the tracks, I just put the main character's name. You'll know who I'm talking about.

All of these are mafia romances. After Mafia Kingdom, the genre slides into paranormal with different characters, but the world is the same. You'll keep your eye on a crown, a cameo, a knife, as these things flow through, even as the people in the normal world don't know their true significance. They never will. These streams will not cross.

IF you want the chronological experience, you should start with Bound By Honor and Luca Vitiello and read the following books in the Born in Blood Chronicles until Bound By Love. Then you should read Twisted Loyalties, Twisted Emotions and Twisted Pride from the Camorra Chronicles before you go back to the Born in Blood Chronicles to read Bound By The Past and Bound By Blood. After that you can read the remaining books in the Camorra Chronicles.

My Sins of the Fathers books are for the Next Gen so if you want to stick to the chronological order, you should read them after all the other books, but they stand on their own and can be read without having read my two other series!

They say your first kiss should be earned. Mine was stolen by a man in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky. They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred. Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man. Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

Francesca is the daughter of the leader of the Chicago outfit who loves another but is unexpectedly thrown into an arranged marriage with a Senator who has an axe to grind and is willing to use Francesca to do it.

Raised by his uncle, the president of the Tartarus MC, Maddox is destined to follow in his footsteps. Now their chapter is on the rise again, but for their ultimate triumph, they need to destroy the Vitiello empire.

Reilly returns to the Vitiello family in this mafia romance book that kicks off a duet and the Sins of the Fathers series. I honestly was first attracted to its hot cover, but I also love that it blends mafia romance and MC romance.

The daughter of my rival and my biggest enemy has literally fallen into my lap. She was never meant to be part of the plan, but Sophia Kastrati turns out to be the perfect pawn in a very dangerous game of vengeance.

The only problem is, she is as beautiful as she is brave, and has captured my full attention.

I have a particular fascination with mafia romance books that have an enemies-to-lovers storyline based on revenge. Somehow the happy ending seems all the sweeter if revenge can be overcome by falling in love.

But we both drank it, again and again, never believing there would be a day when our love would start a fight as big as this. And our friendship would shatter into a million pieces.

Then again, the worst thing you could do in the mafia is to hang on to hope that your life will be normal. The second worst thing? Fall in love with your best friend. Enemy. And heir to the Nicolasi throne.

Mafia romance books can therefore run the gamut when it comes to dark romance. Some may be extremely violent with acts of revenge while others may just have a bit of suspense or none at all.

This is a recommended reading order for the Rinaverse in case you have no idea where to start. Rina Kent's books happen in the same world, but with a slightly different timeline and therefore, many characters pop across different books.

The following series have been unpublished but still take place in the Rinaverse. In the timeline Team Zero and The Rhodes happen before the Royal Elite series, starting with Team Zero and then The Rhodes. However, they can be read at any moment, although it is advised to read the Team Zero series before the Throne Duet as it is connected to Kyle Hunter. The Rhodes family is mentioned and have brief cameos in the Royal Elite series and the Kingdom Duet. It is recommended to read the first two books in the Team Zero series (Lured and Crowed), followed by Remorse and Ruin, then continue with the rest of Team Zero as Crowed provides background on the Pit and explains why there are assassins after Aaron and his cousin Tristan in Ruin.
