In this article, we look at the causes of iMessage failure and offer straightforward troubleshooting tips to help you fix the messages app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Find out how to tell if iMessage is down, what to do if iMessage stops working on your iPhone, and what to do if iMessage is not working on your Mac. We will help you fix all your iMessage problems.
As in all good troubleshooting articles one essential piece of advice is to turn it off and on again. You could start off by double-pressing the Home button and swiping up on the Messages app, before relaunching it. If the app was hanging this may well fix the problem.
Setting up iMessage on an iPhone or iPad should be a simple process, but it can sometimes be problematic. In some case people are seeing an error message when they try to activate iMessage (or FaceTime) on their iPhone.
For the last couple of days I have had problems with my iMessage playing up. For the last two days however, it's completely stopped working. Previously used to work fine! Actions I have ALREADY undertaken to try and fix iMessage always resorting in some kind of error message (i.e. an error has occurred, or activation unsuccessful).
I Have the exact same problem, I had no problems activating it on iOS 7. Probably it's a software problem they need to fix. My number is greyed out too. Tried resetting everything still the same problem. Now I'm only uaing email for iMessage.
However, it seems the SMS sent is either international or an MMS, since my contract didn't allow either it wouldn't work. I'll called my provider and got international SMS allowed and the setting for MMS sent to my phone. After doing this switching imessage off and back on again resulted in almost immediate activation..
I am having trouble with imessage with one contact only. I can send and receive imessages from other contacts. But there is one contact who imessage will not work with from my end or their end. They are also able to imessage others.
Ok, i had to add the email address in contacts to the person it would not send. Then i had to start a new text by typing the email in instead of the persons name. This worked but im really not sure because a week prior i had not problem sending imessage to this person. Hope this helps.
I tried deleting the conversation thread with the contact I was having trouble imessaging, then I tried deleting and adding the contact and resetting my network settings and was still having the same problem however I shared my calendar with said contact and once I removed them from my shared calendar the problem disappeared
Having the same problem and every solution I have found does not work for me. So frustrating!! Even more so, they person can't send a message back to me at all. It says it won't send. I do not have them blocked, yet messages still won't come through. Just upgraded to iOS7.0.6, wish I could go back!!
Have either one of you changed your Apple ID password recently? I was having the same problem and all I had to do was turn iMessage off and then back on in settings and it prompted me to enter my Apple ID password.
May I ask which motherboard and chipset you have? So you do not use onboard Ethernet? Usually the vanilla version works fine and only machines with external Network card (USB to network for example) need the extra kext to fix that kind of problem.
I personally had the issue of "unkown error" and an "impossible to login to facetime/imessage, with an unlock code provided" when logging in imessage/facetime and at the end this resulted an issue with apple server, which only apple could fix, and this means calling apple at the phone, explain and hope to find a good and prepared person
Your appleID is probably blacklisted. Your only choice is to call or chat with apple support and let them know you think your apple ID is blocked. It's possible you've had too many attempts under your current serial number which caused your account to be flagged. In my case I kept getting the message even after starting fresh with a new VM install/new serial number/trying a new apple ID/calling apple to unlock my old apple ID. I'm fairly certain my WAN ip address was causing the problem due to too many attempts to login.
Is iMessage failing with only one iPhone user or with every iPhone user you text with? If necessary, send a short text message to several people and see whether the problem is limited to one person or to everyone.
Thanks again for all your help. Since we are so dependent on phone txt for 2FA, that needs to work seemlessly. I also could not sign into iCloud from my iPhone as kept saying password invalid. I tried password on Apple.com and worked fine so I am thinking the pasword screen on the iPhone for iCloud only might not be accepting a 16 character password. The regular iPhone Apple password sign on screen does accept the password with no problems.
I can't imagine how an iMessage failing could possibly be a Verizon problem. iMessages don't necessarily go through Verizon at all. iMessages use data, not Verizon's SMS system. Even if there were a problem with Verizon's data system, I would think the recipient would get the message once they hooked into a wifi signal, thereby bypassing Verizon all together.
Are you positive the recipients have not recently switched from an iPhone to another platform. This certainly sounds as if it could be the case. When switching from an iPhone to an android, for example, if the person making the switch does not correctly deactivate their iMessage ID, other iPhone users would continue to think they are sending an iMessage to said user. The iMessage will undoubtedly fail since the recipient is no longer using an iPhone. The problem lies in that your phone STILL thinks the contact has an iPhone when that is not the case.
Check with the recipient(s) to see if this is the case. If so, simply have the recipient text "stop" to 48369. This will de-register the phone number from iMessage and your text should automatically go through as SMS instead of your phone attempting to send an iMessage to an android phone. This is an APPLE problem, not a Verizon problem.
When you say the same thing happens over cellular AND wifi certainly leads me to believe this is NOT a Verizon problem. Apple prides itself for having FULL control over the iOS with no outside interference from individual providers. So you have an OS completely controlled by Apple and a messaging system completely controlled by Apple utilizing a wifi network with no control by Verizon and this is a Verizon problem??? Doesn't make sense.
So does your Verizon iPhone send pictures/videos via iMessage to her Verizon iPhone. How bout to other Verizon iPhones? If so, sounds as if it is more a problem with her phone rather than anything else.
Just thought I would jump in here to say you are not alone. As of about a week or so ago, post iOS upgrade, my wife's iPhone 5 is experiencing the same problem (we both have iPhone 5) and she got a similar response from a local verizon service center. I'll be watching this thread and keep my fingers crossed that Verizon/Apple are aware of it and working to resolve the issue.
Earlier this week, iMessage stopped working on my iPhone 6. I went into iMessage settings and noticed it said 'Waiting for activation'. I turned on and then off Airplane mode, then iMessage seemed to be working. However, now that it's back - my iMessages are sending to people with a number thats in a different format. My group chats are not working (every message I send sends both a text + an imessage to users who can ALL receive iMessages). It looks like my phone number on the iPhone has changed format and is spaced in a strange way now. I have tried changing the phone number under Settings -> Phone, turning off iMessage and Facetime, taking out the SIM card, resetting network settings but everytime it keeps reverting back to the incorrectly formatted phone number. After my last attempt, iMessage is back to 'Waiting for activation' and is not working at all.
There is aome MOD putting solution on the forum, i don't if its them who send me the update , i figure it was them if not, well yesterday i went and unrigistered my phone number from i msg, they send me a code and its says it can take up to 1 hours to be unregister, so in the morning when i wake up open my phone and the update carrier was there, i accept and the problem wasn t solve so i reboot my cell and everything works great
i have same problem with my 2 phone, even change my sim card, didn t work, when i try my sim in my wife phone wasn t working but after my wife did the same, start by+61 its Autralia digit code hope someone can help
UPDATE: i just checked the logs, that is the problem and things are working now: "*.content-storage-upload.googleapis.com" - so if you want to use iMessage, you need to give your share of data to goog*le
I went round and round with this and finally solved the issue. Capitalization matters in this build of iOS. You will have to check your AppleID, icloud login, and imessages login to make sure they are all the same. Everything is based on how your AppleID is spelled. Check your AppleID first and sign out of all services until they all show the exact email address. You will need to do the same if you need to change @me or @icloud.
Tim_B_ thanks so much for this, that has resolved my problem. For anyone else with this issue, in the notification settings page of Messages on your iPhone you need to make sure your Show Previews option is set to Always. I had mine set to Never which is what was causing my text messages and iMessages not to show up on my Fenix 6.
