The Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant today visited the Goa Solid Waste Management Plant at Saligao. Expressing his happiness over his maiden visit as a Chief Minister here, Dr. Sawant recalled that the foundation stone of this treatment plant was laid during his tenure as the Vice –President of GSIDC. Mapusa MLA Shri. Joshua D’Souza, Solid Waste Management Corporation’s Managing Director Shri Levinson Martins and others were present on the occasion.
In a review meeting held with the officials of the Solid Waste Management Plant, the Chief Minister discussed the functioning of the plant. “Total of 150 tonnes of garbage from all over the state is treated here per day in a well-processed manner. We have finalized few places like Kundaim, Pissurlem and Colvale IDC to set up treatment plants for E-waste, bio-medical and Hazardous waste. So, after 2 years Goa will be the only state to treat all types of waste,” the Chief Minister informed.
“The Government has also introduced the concept of bio-toilet. Total 17000 bio-toilets are demanded by various Panchayat from all over Goa. The cost for General category is brought down to Rs. 4000 from earlier Rs.10, 000, for OBC Rs. 2500 and Rs. 1000 for ST. The team of Goa Solid Waste Corporation is working hard in making this possible, so that by July 31, 2019, we can declare the state Open Defecation Free (ODF) state,” the Chief Minister told.
