Hi all,

I am new to this group, and joined because (probably like so many
others), I would like to learn more about who my paternal ancestors,
from the village of Saligao, were.

I am named after my great grandmother, and have names of people up to
my great great grandparents. Can anyone help me with possible
connections? What ward the D'Cruz family were from? Stories? Ideas?

Any information would be really helpful and very much appreciated.
Thank you,

Anna-Maria D'Cruz,
Chicago, IL

Hi Anna,
Glad to know that you are a D'Cruz and are trying to search/locate your ancestral roots in our village (SALIGAO)
Welcome to Saligao-net..! your post on this will be seen by many and I am sure you will find all the details you are looking for.
Just let you know that the D'Cruz clan first resided in Salmona with the Figueredo's and both are registered in the records of the Communidade of Saligao in the 1st Vangodd. The chose the best spots near the famous salmona spring where one could get ample
pure drinking water.
you can get lots of information from the Communidade records if you start a search by giving the names of your fater/grand-father.
.Good luck and all the best!

Maybe! Dean, maybe you can get in touch?

Also, my paternal grandmother was a D'Souza and came from a family of
8; I know their names and that all but one married and had large
families themselves. Perhaps someone can shed some light on them too.

Thank you!

DEar Ashley,
Hey, I thought you were aware of the Vangodd and what they stand for...?!.
Any it is a group of people who originally clubbed together when the original settlers decended on Saligao, and developed it.
The first vangodd belongs to the d'cruz and figueredo's, and I am not sure but there may be afew Saldana's also in it. They took the
best spot in the village at that time near the drinking water spring at Salmona. The second vangodd consist of da gama's. de souzas etc.
and so it goes on till the 10th Vangodd. We also have a few "Paustes" (adopted/brought to work people) and they are supposed to get less 'zon' than the gauncars..! Practically all were farmers originally and worked hard for their share of land which were distributed to them...
I could go on and on but its a never ending record and I am not exactly sure when the 'aframents' (properties clearly demarcated, which were in excess) of their requirement got auctioned. They were clearly demarcated and kept both on records as well as on locateion

Hello Ajay (and Lawrence),

As soon as I saw your name I realized you must be Charlie and Ivy's son. I am one of Edwin Saldanha's children. Edwin passed on in August of 2007 and Daphne has since had a 3rd child - Marc... It was so nice to see the names of all my family on the tree. This is a lovely project. Thank you Lawrence!

If Anna's father's family is from Nachinola then it may turn out that you are related to Anna, otherwise it is not likely. Your Mother (Lira) was a Saldanha from Saligao before marrying your Dad who was a D'Cruz from Nachinola, so you are probably not related to the D'cruz line from Cruz Vaddo in Saligao.

I hope this helps...

Jenny (Jennifer)

Dear Ajay,

Attached is a copy of the family tree I circulated in May 2004.

Will appreciate if you would scrutinize and help fill in the gaps to the
extent possible. Would be great if an update can be published.

Happy Easter...

Dear Jenny,

It would be interesting to investigate this Da Cruz lineage further.

I would suggest that the test of whether people are of the same lineage as those from Saligão who have the Surname D'Cruz or Da Cruz is, if there is evidence that they draw a Zonn from Saligão
The case in point is the D,Cruz clan in Quitla, Aldona who are zonncars from Saligão.
This came about I would suggest because a gentleman from Cruz vaddo married an only female child with no other siblings, from the family in Aldona. This was customary practice.

It would be interesting to investigate. However, this could have only taken place after the 16th century. Some social scientists would have a view. I remember my Grandmother telling me at the age of 96 in 1948 that we have relations in Nachionola.

In the meantime as Patron of the Friends of Saligão. in Perth, Western Australia I would like to send my greetings for the forthcoming celebrations of the Feast of Mae de Deus, Patroness of Saligão, to all people of goodwill living in the diaspora with association with Saligão. We have celebrated this in Perth since 1970, when the first Goans arrived in Australia -post removal of White Australia policy.

It would be interesting to build a data base of all Saligão.cars in the Diaspora if we can have your Name, Place and Country of residence.

Regards
Albert.

Hello Albert,

It sure would be! Strangely my mother (who was a D'Cruz from Saligao) had relatives in Aldona and an Aunt of hers, Carlotta D'Cruz is in Australia - not quite sure where though... Her son is Carlyle and I cannot remember her daughter's names. My older siblings may be able to fill in the details on which I am rather fuzzy...
