Just heard from the electricity department (1515 hrs) when I phoned
today, that a truck carrying a container snapped power lines in the
village, and it will take "half and hour to one hour" to get it
restored. Power has been gone for about an hour already! FN

Oops!

Hi Rico!  you are being very optimistic!  Things have changed for the better then?

Presume you all are enjoying the seasonal afternoon/evening rains on a daily basis!  I used to enjoy the light & sound effects but definitely not the wet look!

Have a nice evening!

Regards
Annette

Lights are back. While we do have a lot of problems, the maintainence
quality is improving compared to what it was 10-15 years ago. Of
course, we have a lot more way to go.

I recall, when being one of the early ones to get a phone (due to my
media work, as I was fulltiming with a Bangalore paper then), we used
to have regular day-long, or even week-long, phone failures in those
times. Guess that the technology has become more robust over time, and
the technicians understand it better too.

But, at the end of the day, pressure on the government employees is
crucial to ensure they offer a better quality of service. As they get
their salary eitherway, they lack a motive for this otherwise. FN

PS: Ashley Delaney was in the news today (Gomantak Times, which
unfortunately doesn't have a functional website), talking about plans
for five e-waste collection centres, including two of his (in Saligao
and Bicholim). Electronic wastes, old computers, can find a resting
place there.

Hmm! Marbrouk or Congrats to Ashley then!

With the power back, all can really have a nice, bright evening! I hope to have a relaxed weekend! I am happy to stay in a place where power goes off once in a blue moon, if at all.

Yes I was in the news :-) not just Gomantak, but also navhind times and
the times of India. besides interviews have been appearing on radio
mirchi and prudent media also.
why the big fuss? well its because I've started the first e-waste
recycling company in goa. Have tied up with attero ( www.attero.co.in )
which has India's only ewaste plant and the 7th such plant of its type
in the word today. the plant working is interestingly technology savy
enough so that it actually recycles all IT components that is dumped in
it. Say you dump in 10 motherboards, once it is recycled at the end of
the process, it comes out as 99.9% pure grade metals like Iron, Mercury,
Lead, cadmium etc which were used in the manufacturing process. these
metals can again be reused in the manufacture of components. a total
recycling process and therefore saving us from the vast amounts of
ewaste dumped everywhere.
According to our initial studies Goa alone generates almost 100 tonnes
of ewaste a year! but no one has taken any initiative as such to do
something about it.
Since 2008, the Central Govt. has put in place the hazardous management
act wherein one was supposed to properly recycled ewaste , or give ur
ewaste to authorised recyclers. since goa had no one / and due to
ignorance, everyone gives to your friendly neighbourhood scrap dealer
(illegal) or kabbadiwalla (illegal again). also these scrap dealers burn
or through pouring acid try to get rid of the waste which is highly
toxic and hazardous to all. here we are trying to do it in an
environmentally friendly manner. we are telling people there is an
alternative now. the power is YOURS!. permit me to share an attachment
to the group which has the banner we are using attached.

Ashley, all the best!

Not savvy enough to understand e-waste collection etc....technologySad smile...would presume it corresponds with the recycle bins we have around us nowadays - kitchen garbage, plastic, glass, tin, paper, cardboard, etc......???

Sorry this mail is sent late, got side tracked with other things...but better late than never eh?

There are about 54 items that comprise of e-waste!
these start from your computer, and electronic equipment - continue onto your washing machine, toaster and TV and finally end up with CFL and tube lights!!!
Anything that has a wire, a plug, a battery or runs on electricity, that you probably aren’t going to use ever again comprises of Electronic waste.

including your mobile phone which U change once in a year!
