Poetry Contest

Winners of the Salem Chapter Poetry Contest will get to read their poems at a special poetry event during National Poetry Month and have their poems published in the Salem Monthly.

Marilyn Ebbs and Heather J. Cuthbertson, representatives of the newly established Salem Chapter of Willamette Writers, decided to offer the poetry contest as a way of letting people know about the new chapter and promoting local writers. They have selected a panel of Salem-area poets and poetry supporters to judge the contest.

Contest judges include Miguel-Loredo, spoken word poet who sponsors local poetry events and open mics; F.I. Goldhaber, published poet and fiction writer who has read at a number of local poetry events; and Jaqui Forney, eighth grade teacher and freelance writer.

Two first place awards will be given: one in structured verse and one in free-form. The authors of the two winning poems will be among the presenters at a special Poetry Month edition of Loredo and Friends the third week in April. In addition, the two winning poems will be published in the May issue of the Salem Monthly.

The contest is open to all forms of poetry and all ages. Winners must be available to read their poems in the Salem/Keizer area. Each writer may submit up to two unpublished poems of no more than 100 lines each. Deadline is March 22. Complete contest guidelines and submission instructions can be found at www.salemchapter.com.
