Plug & Play + Portability
By JDP
For me, its always been hit and miss with Jabra products. To be quite honest its been mostly miss. When given the opportunity to test drive the Jabra Speak 510 I had some serious reservations. After four weeks use, these are my thoughts.
The Jabra Speak 510 Speakerphone comes packaged with a nicely padded travel pouch and instruction booklet. This unit charges via the onboard USB cable. The USB cable is hardwired and easily stores in the wrap around base. The standard 3.5 mm jack port is located on the side of this system. The array of lights displayed and the voice instruction when performing a task with this unit is impressive. I like that feature more then I thought I would. Power, battery indicator, volume, mute, call answer, call reject, and bluetooth controls are literally at your fingertips. Even though you won't find it anywhere on the box or in the booklet, this product is covered by a one year limited warranty.
Connecting to both my computer and cell phone was a one and done evolution. Definitely not the headache that I had envisioned with my previous adventures with similar products. Users should keep in mind that only one device can be connected at a time. My Skype connection was crisp with no distortion until I went to my file cabinet six feet away. It was then that my friends noticed an extreme drop off in clarity. I and others picked up on the immediate improvement in overall quality when I connected my Galaxy 3.
If there is a negative its as with all Jabra products coming out of the gate, the company slaps on a high sticker price. The other thought is a minor one but it would be great if more then one device could simultaneously connect into this model. Still, I am very pleased with this Jabra plug and play product. Its compatible with all of my electronic gear. I like the portability too. The folks at Jabra got this one right.

Awesome speaker, great speakerphone, but...
By E. D. Garcia
...don't you just hate it when you get a product that exceeds all of your initial expectations, but then falls flat on a few critical things?
Well, that's happened here.
First, let me say that I really really like this little SPEAK 510 and won't be ditching it any time soon. The sound quality for music is way better than I was expecting. For calls, the sound is exactly what it was expecting. All the LED lights and little touches just launch this product into GOLDEN territory.
LEDs let you know if Bluetooth is on or connected. LEDs let you know if it's charging; and one tap on the battery icon lights up all the LEDs to let you know the charge level. Volume up or down lights up or turns off LEDs in a circle around the speaker. All functions work well and give you at least LED feedback; and sometimes it will give you audio responses as well.
For music output on the SPEAK 510: Bluetooth out of my iPhone and USB out from my MacBook Pro are comparable. The MacBook can push the speaker louder, but the quality is the same: awesome! But what I find really amusing is that if I connect my MacBook to the SPEAK 510 via Bluetooth, it turns the music into Hold Music... for calls and the sound quality. I cracked up!
Anyway, I hooked up the SPEAK to my MacBook via USB and fired up a movie. The sound quality is 300% better than the little built in speakers on my laptop. And there no comparison to open air sound out of my iPhone versus the SPEAK. The SPEAK cranks.
For calls, it works great as a speakerphone. Incoming calls are a breeze. You can answer, mute, and end calls with just a tap. Volume adjustments are similarly simple.
But where it falls flat...
You can't dial out using the SPEAK 510. Tapping the Answer Call button, or holding it down does nothing. I expected it to work like any other Bluetooth headset; holding down the Call button should activate voice commands. But: No. So, you have to dial out on your phone, then switch the call over to the SPEAK 510 after connecting.
And... a headphone OUT jack? Why? If I want a headphone jack, I'll just use the one on my phone or laptop. What I REALLY could have used was a Line In jack instead. Then I could have plugged the SPEAK 510's USB cable into my Airport Express (yes, it will charge that way; I tested it) then just hooked in an audio cable and I'd have another AirPlay device.
I'd have dismissed one design disappointment and given this baby 5 stars, but two let-downs is too much to overlook.
Anyway, quibbles aside, I really like this multi-use speaker. It's lightweight, comes with it's own soft case, and is a little trooper.

This is a USB connection to heaven & a lifesaver...
By Inksnatcher
I absolutely love this product - ohhhh, let me list the reasons (and include the only shortcoming I've found).
#1 Speaker Sound quality - I love the sound from this unit - the deep bass and crisp quality make it really enjoyable to listen to movies etc. on my laptop. I mean sure, it's nice to hear your call in high quality too, but I think Jabra went well above on speaker quality for this speaker phone to where it works beautifully as an external speaker.
#2 Headphone jack - In contrast to another reviewer's negative perception of the headphone jack, I love it. What this allows me to do is to use the unit as a pass through for the audio from my computer to my headphones, but when a call comes through on my phone (when paired via bluetooth), it interrupts the audio and alerts me to the fact that I have an incoming call, which I might miss if I was connected directly to the PC.
#3 No feedback loop - The difference between this as a mic and speaker setup for use with Skype, and the setup that is in my $1500 Dell laptop, is gigantic. Previously, when using Skype on my laptop, I had to use headphones to use Skype because of the feedback loop that causes either echos or high-pitched whistling sounds. I believe this was a combination of proximity of the mic to the speaker and incorrect boost levels. This is not an issue with the Jabra Speak 510.
#4 Internal rechargeable battery - This affords the speakerphone true mobility, since it does not need to be connected via USB to be used. I threw it in the car the other day and used it flawlessly as a speakerphone while driving, making me feel, and actually be, a safer motorist.
#5 Bluetooth - This is the feature that cause me to call this product a lifesaver. I was sitting at my desk working away with my headphones connected while watching something on Hulu, and the unit paired to my Nokia Windows Limia 920. To my shock, as I was working away, the audio from the TV show was interrupted with the following audio message - "Text Message from Terry" "You can say 'read it' or 'ignore'" I chose 'read it.' The message was then translated from text to speech and came through my headphones. The message was followed with the options "Say 'reply,' 'call' or 'I'm done.'" I said 'reply.' It responded with "Say your message." Once done talking it converted my voice to text and back to speech and then read the message back to me. After that my options were "send," "add more" or "try again." With this feature I can drive about and use Bluetooth to receive, reply and create text messages; again, making me feel, and actually be, a safer motorist. This is huge because it not only contributes to my personal safety, but also to the safety of other motorists on the road at the same time.
Now the only feature I expected I could find, which I did see mentioned in other reviews, was that I cannot initiate a call with the green handset button; I still have to use my phone - deal breaker? No, definitely not, especially considering the major wins delivered by the other features.
My final recommendation is this - BUY IT - I want a second one for my car.
