Please refer the mail that follows. It says that the government has given 1 month to the citizens to some up with their comments on the BRAI Bill. Can we do something about it? We could probably prepare a small report of 4-5 pages for a start.

Who all are up for it? Let us keep it small and concise and send it by weekend, if anyone joins in.

Dear Janak -

It is not proven to be safe, but our Government wants to promote it. Many studies have shown that GM foods can lead to illnesses - allergies, organ damage, stunted growth etc.

In the past, citizens have successfully resisted the entry of GM (Genetically Modified) foods like Bt brinjal into India. But our Government now wants to allow GMOs into India through a BillThey have introduced the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) Bill in the Parliament for this reason.

This bill is being reviewed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science & Technology. They have given the whole nation just one month to give feedback on this controversial bill.

As a concerned citizen, I know that 1 month is not enough to get public comments from across the country. That is why I started this petition on Change.org asking the Chairman of the Committee to extend the deadline to 3 months.

GMOs in our farms and food are a huge risk not only for us but also for our future generations. Many Parliamentarians, State Governments and the public have opposed the BRAI bill because of these dangers.

The Chairman of the Committee needs to know that the people of India are concerned about the BRAI Bill. If thousands of us sign my petition, we can show the Chairman that we are demanding atleast 3 months to respond to this Bill.

This is an issue that concerns our food and our nation. Please sign my petition and join me in demanding safe food and agriculture for India.

Thank you for taking action to protect our food,

Sridhar via Change.org
