Hi everyone,
How do you deal with getting your rice polished?
For those of you in the states, you are spoilt with being able to buy polished rice from HomeBrewSake, FH Steinbart, and Minnesota Milling (even the holy grail Yamadanishiki). Those of us elsewhere in the world can't get pre-polished rice too easily (i.e. Minnesota milling will only ship huge commercial orders to Canada).
I picked up a Twinbird last year and unfortunately, it does not work. It does not "polish" anything past 90%, it "grinds" it and breaks it. I tried lots of experiments but it is beyond the machines capabilities to polish sake rice. I even contacted the manufacturer and they said it is not meant to be used past the point of polishing brown rice. Any of the advice around the web advertising this thing should be taken with a grain of salt.
I've been thinking I am going to have to build my own polishing machine. The only tricky part have been finding a polishing/milling stone that isn't overpriced.
What do all of you do? How do you deal with getting your rice polished? This really is the one big hurdle for the homebrewers out there.
Best,
Tyler
