Dear St. Seraphim Family,

Would you like to join an Orthodox mission trip and build a home for a family in need? We still have a few spots left on our SSOC mission trip to Project Mexico next summer!

Please contact Molly Dugan at (360) 746-1486 or mis...@att.net by Friday, November 14th for more information.

What is Project Mexico?

Tijuana, Mexico has a population of 1.3 million residents, over half of whom live on less than $200 per month. Many families live in self-built homes made of old garage doors, wooden pallets, tarps, and other discarded material. These homes are unsafe, and by our standards, uninhabitable.

For over 30 years, Project Mexico volunteers have been building well-constructed, weather-tight homes for these families in the Baja California area. By participating in a mission trip, missionaries not only work tirelessly to build homes for those in extreme poverty, but are also blessed by the opportunity to pray, worship, and gather together with Orthodox Christians from across North America. It is a wonderful opportunity to join together with various Orthodox traditions as one body in Christ, and to follow HIs commandment to “love one another”.

Is it safe to visit Project Mexico?

Yes. We will be escorted by Project Mexico staff at all times throughout the trip. Project Mexico staff will caravan us across the border, to the orphanage, and back and forth from the worksite each day. With over 300 homes built and 15,000+ participants, Project Mexico has never had a security issue.

When?

Next year’s Project Mexico trip will take place during the Dormition Fast, from Thursday, August 6th -- Wednesday, August 12th. This is a beautiful time of spiritual growth and reflection, and an equally beautiful season at the orphanage, where we will be staying.

What is the daily schedule?

Day 1 - Foundation Day (mixing cement, tamping and floating concrete, etc.)
Day 2 - Framing the House (complete wall sections, secure roof panels)
Day 3 - Roof, Windows, and First Stucco Coat
Day 4 - Homebuilding Final Day (stucco, lime wash & house blessing)

Are there age restrictions? I have trouble lifting heavy materials. Can I still join the team?

We welcome all adults and teenagers. Team members aged 14-17 will need the written consent of a parent or guardian to participate. All participants 13 and under will need a parent or guardian present on site.

Teams comprise approximately 25 individuals from across the country, so we will have plenty of physical labor. There are always opportunities for participants who are physically restricted. You can play with the host family’s children, help make lunch for the team, or hold chicken wire in place as another participant secures it.

Do you have to be Orthodox to come?

All Orthodox Christians, Catechumens, and Inquirers are welcome to participate. There will be daily Orthodox services and opportunities for patristic learning; however, Project Mexico welcomes anyone who would like to serve a family in need.
