It's time to think about finding new ALASC leadership for the 2021-2022 school year. A student leadership position will allow you to strengthen your leadership and event planning skills, get involved in the program, and network with LIS professionals. We have three formal positions open. We hope you'll consider applying! Here's what you need to know:

Open Positions: Co-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer
  • Co-Chair: You take over for the Chair in times when they cannot be present. Along with the secretary, you also take charge of publicizing the time for meetings using email and social media. You liaison with SGO (Student Governance Organization) and let them know about any business affecting ALASC. You may also lead smaller work groups.

  • Secretary: You take meeting minutes, maintain the group’s social media account, and email group meeting reminders and meeting recaps. You may also lead smaller work groups.

  • Treasurer: You manage the budget and serve as a resource for finding funding sources. You may also lead smaller work groups.

Nominations Process
We are now accepting nominations for Co-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. To nominate yourself for a position, please email Alyssa Costopoulos with your name, which position you are interested in, and a short 3-4 sentence introduction about yourself. If you'd like to nominate someone else, please send their name, email address, and which position, and then we will email them to accept or deny the nomination. Please send the nominations by Tuesday, September 14 (midnight).

We have two students currently nominated for the Treasurer and Secretary roles: Chris Yard for Treasurer and Alaina Bailey for Secretary. Below they have provided brief introductions for themselves, so you can get to know them before voting.

Chris Yard (Nominated for Treasurer)
"Hello, my name is Chris Yard and I would like to be considered for ALA treasurer.  I have a BA in Political Science from the University of Minnesota Morris and 12 years of experience in the Human Services field including over 5 years of management experience.  I was drawn to switch careers to Librarianship so that I can continue to serve my community and my neighbors while also spending my career nerding out to all manner of wonderful books and information.  At this time I am undecided between the Public and Academic libraries track, and am excited to learn more about each as I make my decision.  In my non professional life I enjoy hiking, mystery novels, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the music of Willie Nelson."

Alaina Bailey (Nominated for Secretary)

"Hi All! First off, my name is Alaina, and I just moved to the twin cities from Oregon to do my MLIS at St. Kate. I recently finished up my undergraduate degree last May through the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I graduated with a Multidisciplinary degree (thanks to all my credits from previous major changes) with a focus on Library Science and minors in Art History and Graphic Design. During my time at UNO, I got to be part of the founding leadership team of the Library Science UNO Book Club.

I’m passionate about helping my community through librarianship and advocating for libraries to get more people through the doors. I would love to work in a public library, specifically in outreach, maker spaces, advocacy, social justice, and programming. Initially, I wanted to work primarily in adult services. Yet, after doing my practicum, volunteering, and all the projects I’ve done through my undergrad, I’ve also developed a fondness for youth librarianship, intellectual freedom, collection building, cataloging departments, and archiving. So, it’s safe to say I’m open to many avenues of librarianship and am excited to see where it takes me!

My everyday interests include anything arts and crafts, movies and tv, reading (of course), Atlas Obscura type travel/exploring, vintage anything (especially music), and going for walks. I want to hopefully start rollerblading again and getting to do some winter activities now that I’m living in a wintery area.

Thanks for reading my synopsis about me! I look forward to getting to know people in the organization and program!"
