Hello All,
ALASC is having our monthly meeting tonight at 5:00. Yharnet has put together an awesome panel of students & alumni to talk about the Practicum experience. I know I (Maggie) am very distracted today as we wait for the verdicts from the jury. I am hoping that gathering as a community will be beneficial to all of us. Looking forward to seeing you - details below.

Hello!
We saw there was some interest in recordings after the panel. Unfortunately, we didn't record it so we wanted to share some highlights.

Highlights:
-Practicums are 120 hours paid/unpaid internship experiences (as long as it's not your current job). More information on MLIS Student Resources.
-Start early in your research. Here's a google doc that can help: Practicum search resources
-Be brave, talk to as many professionals as you can by informational interviews. Great way to boost your network.
-If you are taking archives classes, recommend doing the practicum the semester before so the experiences can count as credit for both classes.
-If you are lacking direction, ask or bring your own ideas.
-Time and project management is key.
-Look into smaller institutions where you can potentially get a job after completing your practicum based on your interests. At larger institutions like U of MN, there is more competition making it more difficult to directly get job offers.

If you would like us or any other student organizations to create more events about practicums like this panel, please let us know!

Sincerely,
ALA Student Chapter
