Hello to our new and returning ALASC members!

We’re excited that the 2022-2023 school year has started and can’t wait to see you all again! We have a bunch of stuff in the works for future events and would value new voices at meetings. Here is the plan for the fall semester so far:

Officers

First off, I would like to introduce your ALASC leadership team:

  • Alaina Bailey (Chair)
  • Megan Pontius (Co-Secretary)
  • Emily Morgan (Co-Secretary)
  • Chris Yard (Treasurer)
  • Anthony Molaro (Faculty Advisor)

Meeting Dates

We will meet every 3rd Monday of the month (except for December) from 6 to 7pm for fall semester. Here are the dates to put in your calendar:

  • September 19
  • October 17
  • November 21
  • December 12

Plans for the Fall Semester

  • We are going to kick of this semester with a fall picnic/potluck at Boom Island Park (Shelter B) in Minneapolis on Friday, September 9th at 4pm.
  •  Next, we have a Virtual Halloween themed trivia night to break the ice, have some fun, and get to know our classmates. It will be on Friday, October 21st at 7pm. Zoom ID: https://stkate.zoom.us/j/92992822906
  •   The rest of the semester will be centered around planning events, panels, and other fun things!

MLA Annual Conference

Whether it is your first semester or last, attending conferences can be incredibly beneficial. This upcoming Minnesota Library Association's (MLA) conference is in Duluth and is the first in-person conference in 3 years! It’s a great way to learn about Minnesota’s library culture, network with professionals from around the state, and learn new and upcoming trends. Don’t forget you can get reimbursed some expenses for professional development activities through the Student Governance Organization (SGO).  Here is a link to read more about the conference on MLA’s site.

Keeping Up with ALASC

We usually communicate information about the ALASC through email newsletters, the St. Kate’s MLIS student discord, and Instagram (@stkatesalasc).

Joint MLA/ALA Membership

You do not need to be an official member of the American Library Association (ALA) to participate in our group. That being said, we strongly encourage you to consider joining. It costs $44 per year, and you will be a member of the state association (MLA) and the national association (ALA) while you are a student. This is less than what current professionals are paying and gives you increased access to library resources, networking opportunities, and reduced conference fees. Let us know if you have any questions about this.

As always, we would love to hear your suggestions on what you like to see with the group. Please feel free to reach out and get involved with the group in whatever way works best for you.

If you need to contact ALASC representatives, you can email us at ala-st...@stkate.edu, or email Alaina Bailey at ambai...@stkate.edu.

See you September 19th!
