Hello again:

My main sail on our 44 ft St. Francis Independence is on its last
legs. I am wondering if anyone on here has one they want to sell. My
old one is delaminating and made of composite. I would prefer a
dacron one but will go with the mylar composite again if the price is
right. I am in Tonga and have no sail maker within a thousand miles
so am hoping to "band-aid" the issue until I can get to a place where
I can have one made. Alternatively if anyone has had one made for a
reasonable price I would be interested in where and at what cost. I
have priced out constructing one in Oz and NZ and Hong Kong and the
States and am shocked by the prices. I have also located a few options
on used sail websites but none of them are a "true" fit and would need
alterations by a loft which is non existent here.

Cheers,

Otis

Hi Otis,
We were having the same issue with our main and we're just a week or so away from the new one being delivered. If you contact Bruce Empey from Neil Pryde Sails he did a very thorough job of measuring and designing a basic dacron cruising sail for us. The specs I am pretty sure would be the same for your boat or very close to it.  The price was very reasonable, though I can't tell you exactly b/c he also made us a new stack pack and we got a strong track system too, so I forget how the prices break down on it all. The issue as you know is that the main on the StF44's are HUGE!

Tell him you have the same boat as Doug Vibbert & Cindy Wallach on Majestic.
Best to you with your repairs and we'd love to hear more about your time in the Pacific sometime. I have always been curious where boats who don't zip over to Oz go to ride out storm season. We're just 15 months away from leaving (finally -- I had a baby which put a little wrench in our plans, though a very cute cuddley wrench)

Let us know if we can help in any way!
cheers
Cindy Wallach

Have you tried contacting contacting Quantum, South Africa. We have some friends that needed a new main for there Dean and found Quantum S.A. to be the best price. Don't know what that price was though. They did say it was cheaper for the sail and shipping to Grenada than the sail along in the states.

Good Luck with your search. Hope everything else is good aboard Independence.

Hello steve,   I do have a used one in pretty good shape but no battens with it.   It is a Doyle and the stitching and fabric is in good shape except for a few chafe spots in 2 batten pockets.  The problem is I am in Florida so shipping is an issue.    Thanks. Otis,

We had a quote from Quantum in Charleston, SC and it was about $7700 (quote was in Feb. 2011); depends on your options of course (I think the base was around 5300).
You could contact him at:  jbo...@quantumsails.com

Cheers,

I think our sail was 6000, which was Dacron, with tradewinds specs from Neil Pryde (so lots of reinforcing, etc.) and included new battens.   I believe that North sails came around 5300 or so reusing existing battens.   The price of exotics such as spectra has gone way up due to the wars.
