The Heart Beat                                                    November, 2014
Resonating with the Divine - Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital
In a Life filled with moments of  joy or sorrow, hope or despair, tireless striving or eternal calm, a rhythm is being played. An unravelled mystery, this rhythm of life resonates to a  silent beat. A Beat that sees us through this drama, we call Life. At  Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani, we surrender in love to that Heart which beats in you and a million others - The Giver of Life !
This month was sacred as we completed two years on November 23rd, the 89th Birthday of Beloved Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, our continous inspiration. While much has been done, we have a long way to go in serving the thousands of children who need cardiac care every year.
The stories of Shivam and Pankaj, tender hearts with complex medical challenges were the highlights of the month. But what was heartening was how the families dealt with these challenges. Firm  faith and  surrender to the Divine Will a feature consciously strengthened at Sanjeevani was their anchor.

We are pleased  to share with you a brief  on Shri. Raghavendra, a septuagenarian who has untiringly served for over three decades in Bhagawan’s Mission. We are sure that his thoughts on instutionalizing the spirit of service in Swami’s way would be great learning to  all the readers.

We thank every  guest and well wisher who visited our campus to witness" His Love at Work" and for continuing to spread the message of selfless service. In this edition we make special mention about the visits of Santoor maestro Shri Pt. Shivkumar Sharma ji, Smt. Paritala Sunitha ( Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Government of Andhra Pradesh) and Shri. Sanjay Tandon (President of BJP, Chandigarh)

“Matruchhaya” – an innovative concept of postoperative care by 'mothers'. It was introduced by our distinguished doctors wherein one gets to witness the healing power of Mothers Love. Finally a brief on the conferences attended by Sathya Sai Sanjeevani staff.

Do continue to stay in touch. We sincerely value it.

MatruChhaya
The oldest form of Healthcare

A Mother's love is something
that no one can explain,
It is made of deep devotion
and of sacrifice and pain,
It is endless and unselfish
and enduring come what may
It believes beyond believing
when the world around condemns,
And it glows with all the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems . . .
A many splendored miracle
man cannot understand
And another wondrous evidence
of God's tender guiding hand
A Mother’s Love
By Helen Steiner Rice
It is this pure, unselfish and undeterring love of the mother that forms the basis of child care at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital. “MatruChhaya” literally means “In the shadow of the Mother”. At Sai Sanjeevani, a mother is with the child at all times except during the surgery and pre-extubation periods. An operated child experiences the warmth of his/her mother almost throughout the post-operative period.
All mothers and guardians are trained and counseled by the medical and paramedical teams during the pre-operative period on cleanliness & sanitation, maintenance of sterile conditions and basics of post-operative child care. They are particularly briefed on “Dos” & “Donts” and on signs of child recovery.
Post surgery, while highly trained and experienced nurses are the primary care givers, mothers play a crucial role in providing the required warm environment to the child for a speedy recovery.
Medical benefits:
The following are some of the major advantages noted by the medical team after analyzing post-operative recoveries of over 400 children operated at Sai Sanjeevani.
  • Reduced requirement of analgesics and sedatives
  • Easier medical management and handling of the child – medicine administration, physiotherapy , dressings and so on
  • More amenable for management in presence of the mother
  • More accurate interpretation of child response
“We have performed over 400 surgeries at Sai Sanjeevani and are really happy that ‘MatruChhaya’ as a concept has been very advantageous in not only providing better post-operative care, but also almost completely evading any post-operative respiratory complications” – Dr Krishna Manohar, Chief Pediatric Surgeon, Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital.

Social Impact
At Sai Sanjeevani, it is common to observe patients and their families with poor cleanliness and sanitation habits. However, it is encouraging to see most of them transform into better and cleaner care givers through the training provided under MatruChhaya. However we feel that the true impact is that when these transformed families leave Sai Sanjeevani, they are also adequately convinced and prepared to spread the message of cleanliness to so many more families within their communities.
“The dream of a Clean India can only be possible if every Individual and Institution drive it together” - Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.
Apart from the medical benefits, MatruChhaya  is Sai Sanjeevani’s contribution to Swachh Bharat (Clean India).

Medical Marvels of the month
A Case of William's Syndrome
Sivam Gupta’s parents were shocked to know that their 1 month old boy was suffering from a sever congenital heart condition. They sold everything they had (their entire saree business) to treat him in leading private hospitals of Benaras and Delhi for over 4 years. Even after so much of struggle, the doctors filled their hearts with fear on the possibility of their little child’s survival post surgery.

“हम दिन रात भगवान से प्रार्थना करते थे कि वो कोई अच्छा रास्ता दिखाये , क्योंकि हमे डाक्टरों से पूरा भरोसा उतर गया था।“
(We would incessantly pray to God to show us the right way beause we had lost all confidence on doctors)

This 4.5 year old boy was brought to our hospital by the parents of another boy who was operated at Sai Sanjeevani. He had a history of excessive tiredness and syncopal attacks since almost an year. He was diagnosed to have severe discrete supravalvular Aortic stenosis(SVAS) with Left Ventricular hypertrophy and  dysfunction, along with clinical features of William’s syndrome.

After detailed case discussions in our multi-disciplinary team meeting, he underwent BROM’s 3 patch technique repair of the discrete Supravalvular Aortic fibromuscular ridge. The boy did well in the ICU and could be extubated from ventilation and other supports within 12 hours. The child was shifted to the post-op ward soon and was discharged in a hemodynamically stable condition on the 8th day post surgery.

This is a very rare condition that is frequently referred to as William’s Syndrome, although the child did not have immunodeficiency problems related to the condition.

They Said:
“हम सच कह रहे हैं, यहाँ अपने सारे दुख खतम करके, भगवान के इस जीवन दान को साथ में लेके, हम घर खुशी खुशी जा रहे हैं।“
(Truly speaking, after dropping all our worries here and humbly accepting this Gift of Life from Bhagwan, we are very very happy and are going back totally satisfied)
The rare case of AP Window

“जब से ये पैदा हुआ, इसको बहुत सर्दी और खांसी होती थी। हम घबरा गए थे जब गाँव के  डाक्टर ने बताया की आपरेशन 2 साल के बाद ही हो पाएगी।“
(He has been suffering from frequent cold and cough since he was born. The started getting worried when the doctor in our village informed us that the surgery can be undertaken only after 2 years)

This 3 month old infant having repeated hospitalizations since birth was brought by his parents to our hospital. Pankaj showed a very rare form of a large communication between the two great arteries of the heart (the Aorta and the Pulmonary Artery) called as the Aorto Pulmonary Window (type B – distal). Identifying the severity of the case, the child was immediately admitted to the Sick kids ward for surgical correction.
The baby underwent  a sandwich patch repair of the AP Window. The baby was electively ventilated for the next 36 hours for control of severely raised pulmonary artery pressures. He was extubated 2 days post surgery and after showing a smooth postop recovery, was discharged 10th day post surgery.

This case has been a rare kind of surgery undertaken in this part of India. Being a very rare type of heart lesion, it needed an excellent team work and watchful Intensive care management in order to achieve a favourable outcome.

They said:
(We felt very nice here. Everyone here are like siblings to each other. We really don’t feel leaving this place and going back home. Our child has been cured due to Baba’s grace. We are going back totally satisfied)

An the onset, I would like to thank Baba from the bottom of my heart for giving me a new life. Almost all doctors of Chhattisgarh had told me that this surgery would not be possible here and I had to go to Bangalore. But it was almost like there was some force which wanted to gift me my life and thus showed me the way to Sathya Sai Hospital. I don't think this is a Hospital, this is truly a temple where Baba gives a new life to one and all. All the staff here treat patients so lovingly that just seeing them brings so much joy. The most important thing is that the doctors of this hospital treat patients as God. Words are insufficient for the experiences I have had here. I only wish to convey to Baba, to all the doctors and to all the staff - Thank you, Thank you, Thank you !

Shri B.V. JayaRaghavendra
Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust
A Lifetime of Service in Action is what Shri B.V. JayaRaghavendra ji (or Raghavendra Sir as we lovingly call him) stands for. For over three decades, Shri Raghavendra has served incessantly in Swami’s organizations including the Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital, Sri Sathya Sai Super Specialty Hospital, Whitefield, Bangalore and currently leads the administration of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital.
He fondly recollects that in 1971, on the insistence of his wife he first saw the divine form of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. A pleasant secret was revealed  by his mother way back in 1944, that  Swami had blessed and instructed his mother that he should be in Bangalore only – which today is clear, was for a purpose in the Divine mission.
It was after 30 years, that he felt an inner voice telling him that it was time to give back to society through Swami’s Institutions of Service and thus began his wonderful journey.
Today, as Sai Sanjeevani completes 2 years, we  learn from his  long years of experience as he shares with us his understanding of what Swami would expect from us in providing  “Hospitality in Hospitals”.
“In Swami’s words Hospitality is a continuation of the word Hospital. Although generally the word Hospitality is used mostly for Hotels, Swami told us that Hospitals and Hospitality must go together.
Swami always said that Education, Water and Medical treatment are basic necessities and must be provided free to one and all in the Society. It is for this reason that he announced that Medical Treatment will be provided completely Free of cost to anybody who comes to Swami’s hospitals.
Swami particularly laid a lot of importance on seva in his Institutions. He always emphasized that people who get a chance to serve in his hospitals, to attend to the patients, must have a Heart as cool as Moon, Mind as pure as Butter and Speech as sweet as honey and that these characteristics are absolutely essential to be serve in Swami’s Institutions.
Swami always asked, “Why does a patient come from a far off place in search of treatment to my hospital? Is it because it is a free hospital, is it because it is a blessed place or is it because all of you connected to the hospital are sympathetic  and helpful , and make the patient feel  that he or she was treated as as honored guest?”
Swami would reply that while all the three are essential, the last characteristic mentioned is the most important. It is Hospitality by which we can make a patient feel that he/she deserves to be treated in Swami’s hospital with no strings attached and no expectations except the welfare of the patient. He said “Do not make the patients feel inferior as though you are providing everything free out of pity. It is a sin to think and act like that.”
This culture of treating patients as honored guests that the staff of the hospital are eagerly waiting to serve forms the crux of what I learnt in Swami’s little hospital (as he used to call Sri Sathya Sai General Hospital, Whitefield).
Today, I experience the same energy and hospitality here in Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital. In both these hospitals although most of us are not directly connected to the treatment process, every time we interact with patients, are precious Moments of Truth to practice HOSPITALITY in hospitals, as per Swami’s guidance.
Based on my experience on doing Seva, my only suggestion to the youngsters of today would be – “Whatever you expect from  society, you should be ready to give at least 10% of it back to  society. That is absolutely the bare minimum to provide a lasting impact on society".

The Gift of life to the child, reflected by a healthy glow on the child’s face and a happy smile on the parents’ faces should be the only Gift of service.
They  came,  they  saw  and....
