The Object and Subject of Learning  - Prof. H J Bhagia

It was 1991 and like every year, Swami was to bless the MBA day celebration at the institute. Swami however was not yielding, in fact HE seemed extremely upset and was not willing to speak to the boys. Three of us - Prof. US Rao, Prof. Sudhir Bhaskar and I decided that we will pray to HIM on behalf of the boys and plead to HIM to attend the program.

We approached Swami, but HE seemed to be angry. HE expressed disappointment on our teaching stating that we were not combining the 'Object' learning with the 'Subject' learning. I gathered courage and asked HIM what specifically HE wanted our boys to learn. Swami said, "Boys should learn three things. They are Common Sense, General Knowledge and Human Values".

HE said, "Common Sense is doing the right thing at the right time at the right place." HE explained the same through the story of two brothers - a wise village headman and his dull brother. The wise brother would console the death of an elderly lady by consoling the bereaved son saying that the deceased lady was like a mother of the entire village. The dull brother however tried to mimic his brother by using the same technique when someone lost his wife!

Regarding General Knowledge HE said, "General Knowledge is not about knowing what's happening across the world. But knowing and understanding your internal Self."

On Human Values, Swami stressed that they are not merely five values of Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema and Ahimsa. Human values are present in a person if he had unity of thought, word and deed. HE said, "A man of values is a man of character. Character can be developed by control of senses".
