Story Behind this Photo – 49:
From Swami Gnanananda to Bhagavan Sathya Sai Baba.
I had earlier made several references to my friend Sri “Sain Premi”, Dr. Balakrishnan.
Please view this old photograph taken during the year 1957. Sai Premi is sitting on the extreme right side, holding a Tambura., and His old friend Sri. Haridos Giri sitting on the extreme left side. From his young age, he was much interested in rendering classical music. Sadguru Gnanananda swami advised him to turn to Nama sankirtan. What a bug Turn? From there onwards, it sampradaya bhajan all along. It was in 1956 when he came under the spell of Gnanananada Swamigal. In Swami’s Ashram, he met Haridoss. They became so much attached to each other.
Sath Guru Gnanananda Swamigal used to send them to Kerala for performing Sita Kalyanam, Radha Kalyanams etc. Annaji Rao Bhagavathar, father of Haridoss, used to like my singing better than his own son.
But something clicked in the mind of Sri. Balakrishnan, when the Sathguru one day pronounced, “ Sri Sathya Sai Baba is "ANATHYUM KODUKKA VALLA ANANTHAPPAN" ( He is an unfathomable Father who is capable of giving anything or everything to His devotees. ). He feels that it was the wish of Sathguru that he should now take an another turn, from Sampradaya Bhajan to “Sai Bhajan. From then onwards, no looking back. Sayee and Sayee all the way.
For the sake of thousands of Sai devotees, I wish to give brief introduction of Sathguru Gnanananda Swamigal.
Gnanananda was born to an orthodox
Brahmin couple, Venkoba Ganapati and Mathi Sakku Bai.
[4] Gnanananda was named
Subramanyam at birth, and left his home at a very early age.
Sivaratna Giri accepted Subramanyam as his disciple and named him
Pragnana Brahmachari.
[5] Gnanananda followed his guru, Sivaratna Giri like a shadow and showed great love in serving his guru. When Gnanananda was about thirty-nine years old, Sivaratna Giri indicated to his disciples his intention to "leave his mortal frame". Sivaratna Giri initiated Gnanananda in the traditional manner into the
Giri order of
Jyotir Mutt and gave him the monastic name of
Sri Gnanananda Giri.
Gnanananda Swamigal adorned the 6th lineage of Peetam of Jagadguru Totakacharya for some time. However he nominated one Ananda Giri in his place and retired to the height of the Himalayas for penance. Gnananda spent many years at the sacred spot of Gangotri and icy caves of the Himalayas in intense tapas. Swamial took it upon himself the task of spreading the importance of Nama Sankeertanam
Swamji was well versed in all the modes of Bhajana Sampradaya and he is very firm strong that Hari Bhajana was the easiest way to attain "Moksha". He had chosen Haridas Giri propagated the importance of Namasankeetanam.
With Love & Regards,
