I have 16' Mistral Sport that I have owned for about 5 years. I sail this
boat about ten times per year, in a sheltered saltwater river and sometimes
in the open ocean on the right day. I am a competent sailor but not an
expert. I just enjoy sailing casually and want to continue to do so.

Now for my question. When I bought my boat it was rigged with a Holt Allen
(HA-4176-M) mainsheet block and I am happy with this setup. I have attached
a picture. Over time I have noticed the swivel action is getting bound up
and the cam cleats have lost their spring action for closing. It all still
works fine, just a bit clunkier than I would like. I know I can replace the
cleats easy enough but I am not sure why the swivel is a problem. I have
tried cleaning it to no avail, but have yet to remove from the boat to check
the underside. It's on my list to try. I was wondering what others are using
on their boats and how they like their block system. Any advice appreciated.

Also, I have the original Mistral 16 Sport and Cabin brochures, as well as
the Mistral 16 rigging instructions that came with my boat. Over the years I
have shared scans of these with other members, and I am happy to do so if
people would like a copy. Just let me know.

Thanks,

Jon

I have the same boat and a similar problem, but unfortunately no solution.  I have found that, with the recalcitrant swivel, the mainsheet often as not is free of the cleats but jams in the pulley, usually at the worst possible time.  My “solution” has simply been to forego the block entirely and hold the mainsheet in my hand.  I’ve figured if that’s my biggest problem with a 30-year-old boat (and it was until the mast fell down . . . ), then I’m probably lucky.

I know that’s not the solution or advice you were hoping for, Jon, but I’m hoping you might still oblige me w a scan of the Sport handbook and rigging instructions.  I bought my boat used a couple of years ago and it had none of that.  It is moored at our cottage and guests sometimes ask to use it when I’m not there – I have left Wayfarer materials as something close but the actual Mistral stuff would be great if it’s not too much trouble.

I wouldn't mind the scans as well.
Thanks in advance.
