I just bought a mistral 16 and I was wondering if anyone is still active on this page. There hasn't been any activity for over 6 months. Could everyone just say hi or something, let's see who is still around.

Mistral are rare boats and its nice to see that there are other owners out there. I have also started a Facebook group if any one is interested it's called "mistral 16 sailors". I'd really like to start an active community and move towards a Mistral 16 association.

So let's here from you,
-what color are your sails,
-what's your sail number,
-what year is your boat,
-have you sailed this year,
-have you modified your boat in any way.

Or just say hi, let's show that there is still a pulse and an interest in this group.

So I'll start.

My boat is a 79
sail colors orange and brown,
sail number 263
I havent sailed yet because of work I need to get done ie. replace the drain plug. Although I found a beer bottle cork works so I may start with that.

Hi David,
I'm still here but have not had a chance to sail the boat this year.
I am not even sure the year of my boat. I like to stay in touch with others who have the Mistral as well.

Hi David and welcome. I'm. Still here and manage the site but there's not much to do there since you can no longer post pictures or data pages.  I get 5 to 7 people email me each year asking for the manual and I send all the data I have and direct them to our group.  It would be nice if someone had the time to put together a real website where we could post pics and data again.  I haven't had the Mistral out for a couple of years. I'm out of state as always (Florida this time) and have our Spindrift 22 and a Downeast 32 with me here so again,........no time for the Mistral.  I dont remember the year or my sail number off hand but I also have the original Brown/orange sails.  I do have pictures with me. Well, I hope yoi woke  up some peopled and get to get some sail time in.

Good winds

Hi Jim

I believe that the year is the last two numbers of the seriel number on the transome.  A least my boat was advertised as a 79 and the last two numer on the transome are a 79 so I figured thats what they mean.  Thanks for responding, its nice to see that this group will be active.

Nice pic, and thanks for the reply.  Thank you also for managing this group.  Where this is a rare boat we need a place to come together and comunicate.  Here is a link to my facebook group where you can easily post pictures and other stuff.  I think you have to be on facebook to partisipate in the group though.

Im also on sailnet forum where there has been some other Mistral 16 activity over the last year or so.  Maybe I'll approach the moderators to start a Mistral thread there for us.

 Hi there!

I'm still here too. Havent sailed yet this year, the water was still a little cold for us in Quebec. Both of our boats out and ready to sail! We have 2 Mistral, one 4.04 and one 4.70W. I know thats not exactly the same as the 16, but you guys are as close as I found to our kind of boat. I dont have the specs and all but here are some pictures.

If anyone wants to sail in the St-Lawrence near Quebec City, let me know!

Regards!

Although I don't like this Goggle format, I will respond. I have a Mistral 12 that is like new. I did change the bailer though. Instead of the original flap, I installed a screw-in cap using PVC fittings from the hardware store and a bit of fiberglass paste to seal it. I am in New Jersey: www.rvharvey.com

Ahoy, all!  I'm still here.

I have a Mistral 12 that I've sailed using an O'Day Wigeon main (I got the boat with no sails).  I've also got a Mistral 16  (orange sail set) that I've yet to get on the water.  It needs a patch immune of the seats and the spreaders reattached to the mast.

Last year we bought a CL 14 and a 14 foot LOA seems like a better size boat for the two of us to use together.  The 12' seemed too small and when my husband (big guy) had it on  a pond w little wind, he'd often babe to sit mid thwart to keep from listing either way.  He's tall so also had to keep ducking.  He is new to sailing, so we decided to go w a bit roomier craft for the local pond and lakes.

I'll probably be selling the mistral 12.  I hope to find time to get the Mistral 16 fixed and sailed.  it looks like it will be a fast, responsive sailing dinghy.  There is a very brief sailing video of a Mistral 16 on YouTube (the Canadians w the orange & white sails).  I've also watched a few of the Wayfarer sailing videos (very similar to the Mistral and CL sailing dinghies).

The CL 14 is a lot like the Mistral 16 -- double chined hull, thick hand laid fiberglass.  We went for a long sail last August in brisk wind and it was wonderful.  We didn't come in until dusk.  My back flared up for a long while after; that was the only drawback.

Ralph and Jim, nice photos.

I don't do Facebook.  It sort of creeps me after a friend signed up to see her nephew's photos and Fb went through her address book and sent out invites to all of those people -- she didn't know it was going to do that.

Heat wave in New England for a few days.  Maybe when it's passed I can untarp my boats and work on them.

(sending this to the list, but forgot my pw, so don't know how it will work.) yahoo has groups that allow photos or files. I belong to some of them, but they often have to be moderated from spammers or malware that members independently have caught and that spews spam to their address book.

Hi Rob;

I also live in Kitchener, Ontario and also sail an older model Mistral 16. You must be close if L. Ontario and L. Huron are your area of sailing.

We sail on and around the Bruce Peninsula and you're right about the stability.

My trailer is heavier than I'd like but it works so no problem.

Your Mistral 16 is a fibreglass knock off of the original Wayfarer from England and yes, the sails and hardware for a Wayfarer or a CL16 are pretty much interchangeable.

Yes, my hatch cover is not the best, difficult to keep battened down, a gunge collector and not very water proof. I am considering redesigning the rear layout to eliminate that and other problems. I'll need a Marine repair shop or someone with a lot of good advice and encouragement.

If you need replacement parts or hardware get in touch with the guys at CL Boatworks in Fort Erie, Ontario. They are excellent for advise, spare parts and new work if you need it. Chris has a lot of used parts that can be used directly or modified to fit your needs for very reasonable cost.

If you get away with spending only $500 for new sails I'd be impressed. My own Mistral uses Wayfarer sails no problem.

Advertise in Kijiji or search Kjiji for what you may need. Some kind of province wide bulletin board for second hand owners like us would be very useful but not likely to happen as the builders and retailers are more interested in selling new stuff than recycling the old.

Some inland lakes have sailing clubs where Wayfarers were or are popular. Go visit them and you'll find a lot of sailors with a wealth of maintenance experience. Both Conestoga L. and Guelph L have sailing clubs near me with a lot of boats and weekend sailors.

Subject: Re: Is anybody out there?

I bought an Mistral 16 this year and Leroy got me a manual (Thanks!) It's been in the water about 6 times so far -- probably 15-20 hrs total. I'm in Canada and I've sailed Lake Ontario and Lake Huron. Tons of fun. I think its an 82 sail # 769 Orange/Brown sails. Sails fast and very stable. My wife crews most of the time. Things to note. I think the trailer a got is the orginal. I did a lot of work on it to make it safe but it seems a little light. That's good and bad -- easy to push around. Does anyone have trouble with the hatch covers not closing completely? Is there a source of replacement sails, or would CL16 or wayfarer sails fit? Same question for a cover -- would a CL16 or wayfarer cover fit nicely? I want to know before I drop $500. Thanks

Hi, I bought a CL16 sailcover for my Mistral 16, fits well, works fine.

Also their jib furling gear, which works fine without any modification.

Cheers

Hi all,   Just picked up a 16 with original and a newer set of sails (no spi).  Not in the water, still in the driveway making sure the trailer hubs are redone before I head out to the lake.  The boat is an 86-87 vintage, white and seems in pretty good shape foe it's age.  I found out it's history of being beached made the previous owner feel the bottom was getting thin so he added some fiberglass to reinforce it.  Aside from that, it is original.

Just ahead of where the stays meet the deck, there is(are?) a small triangular base component with the upper part broken off.  Can anyone help me with what these are for and if replacements are available somewhere?   Also, I will need help with the trapeze setup.

I would like to get any docs and specs available if someone has them in electronic fomat...

Hope there is still someone else around to exchange with.

Cheers

Mark

Can you send a picture? I can check mine. I remember there was a cleat that I never really used.
I keep my boat at my brothers and was planning on selling it this year so I will look next time I am down.

Welcome Mark and congratulations on your new sloop.
I have a copy of the rigging instructions sent to me by LeRoy some while back. If you haven't gotten them by now, let me know. My Mistral 16 is under tarp, but I might be able to look at past photos and see if I can figure out what you mean.

Between one thing and the other, I have never got mine into the water. I still need to patch a hole in the bench seat and re-attach the spreaders from where they pulled from the mast. I think I'm going to be selling it, but may try to find time between rain drops and other things to do the repairs.

This group doesn't see much activity. Apparently there is a FB page, but I don't have a FB account and won't be rushing to get one because of the every switching privacy settings and other things.

I have another 16' sloop, and a few years ago bought a CL 14 (the CL 16 is very much like the Mistral 16 and the Wayfarer). The 14' is a good sized sloop for our small lakes when I'm not using one of the board boats.

I'd like to see a more active group of CL, Mistral sailors.  Anyone have any videos to share of their Mistral 16 underway?  I have the Mistral 12, but use an O'Day Widgeon sail on it.

Show us your boat, Mark. I say "us" -- besides Jim, you and I, who's around?

Well, hello, Paul!  I grew up a half mile from a salt water GUNKHOLE  -- at low tide, a huge cove (acres) would be grey muck that was probably too soupy for even the most accomplished clams. We'd sometimes go there to swim if the tide was due to be high in late afternoon. The sun would have heated the mudflats all day, so that made the water a very nice temperature.

You must have to have a decent mosquito screen ;)  I believe I've seen photos of the Wayfarers with snap down tents and the wooden slat benches are removable so that the cockpit become a sleeping area.  Peep Hens and WWPs are good for that sort of meet up camping and gunkholing.
Have fun on your first sail of the season.  Take some pics to share here, please.

Mark, I think I know the part you're speaking of and will post under a new topic.

Okay, I am still here and still have a Mistral 12. I recently posted a few more pictures of Mistral boats on my website <www.rvharvey.com> towards the bottom of the Mistral page. If anyone has photos of other Mistral sailboats, send me copies! If anyone has a manual, please scan it and send me the scans. I can put them into a PDF file and post it for others to download. My site gets an average of over 2000 visits per day, but not many for Mistral boats. They were built by Canadian Yacht Builders of Quebec and I would appreciate any information anyone has on this company like, location, when they started building boats, and when they stopped; what models in what numbers were produced etc. Happy sailing!
