The Sai Kulwant hall in Prashanti NIlayam wears a deserted look. The daily activities of chanting and singing go on, but even a new comer can say that something big is definitely missing. And that is nothing difficult to comprehend when the entity “missing” is as glaring as the sweetness in sugar, the idol in a temple, the soul in a body - Swami in the Nilayam! Ever since He was taken to the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences on the afternoon of the 28th, life has changed a lot for everyone.

The crowds are now thronging outside another temple - the temple of healing located a few miles from the Nilayam. And everyone has only one question, “How is Swami?” In answer came an official statement:

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, whose 85th Birthday was celebrated last November, was hospitalized in the afternoon of March 28.  He had developed slowing of heart rate with giddiness. A permanent pacemaker has been implanted. His clinical parameters are satisfactory and His condition stable.

Dr. A. N. Safaya

Director, SSSIHMS, Prasanthigram

That brought relief no doubt, but everyone pines to see Swami back in the mandir. Further news arrived that Swami had a restful night and very soon would be resuming His darshan schedule. Again heartening but makes hearts pine to see Him in the pink of health as soon as possible. Meanwhile, bhajans and prayers in various forms have cropped up the world over. Every devotee is harvesting his/her good deeds and pitching it in for Swami. But along with the harvest of these prayers grow the weeds of rumors, gossip and dejection. And these weeds grow at the slightest available opportunity. What is to be done? Whatever one does to the weeds!

An attempt at some weeding is done here. Swami was taken in an ambulance and since none could see their beloved form in orange behind the blackened glass, there came an opportunity for the weeds to grow. But little does anyone know that behind those closed doors, Swami was not on any stretcher. He was seated on a chair.

Everyone is thinking of Swami and worrying that there is no news. Another weed begins to grow there. In times when matters of health are on the balance, have we all not heard that “no news is good news”? Instead of celebrating that ‘the condition is stable’ and nothing worrying has happened, why do we tense. Swami tells the story of a person who finds a struggling fish on the sea shore. Out of love, to help it, he takes it home, covers it in blankets and pours it some hot coffee for comfort. The fish dies. All of us have love and concern but we should not express it in ways that may be counter productive.

Let us not, even for a moment, forget who Swami is. This is a time when we should sit and contemplate on all those wonderful experiences where we have felt the Lord in our lives. When He has cancelled cancer with a word, healed hearts (physical and spiritual) in moments, made the lame walk and the blind see - all with a smile, can some worldly ailment even come near Him unless He has willed it that way? In 1963, He had cured Himself completely of a paralytic stroke simply with a few drops of water. Knowing this and reminding ourselves of this always will clear away any remaining weeds.

It of course pains the heart to know that someone very close to us is admitted in the hospital. But this ‘someone’ is actually our ‘everyone’. And we MUST do everything possible to get Him out. After the weeding out exercise, its time to add some fertilizer to grow a crop of good thoughts and feelings.

The world over, in various forms, ominous happenings have been predicted - the year 2012 is supposed to be the end of the world! How the hell could that happen when God walks on the earth? Go back to the Yugadi discourses in the past few years and we will hear Swami saying that though the years head will be filled with turmoil and difficulty, nothing will affect one who holds on to God. And that is exactly what we must do now. Do good and Pray.

The problem here is actually our fears and sorrows. And what do we do about that? Swami again says it so beautifully - There are three hands on a clock and three aspects in our life. The seconds hand is that of good deeds. When it moves 60 units, you get one movement of the minute hand which is a good feeling. When so much good is done alone will you get a good feeling. 60 such good feelings leads to one Atmic insight or the arrival of a ray of wisdom. It is only with wisdom that one can go beyond sorrows and fear. And so the first step is to do good. That is how the Karma path, Bhakti path and Jnana path are all linked and interwoven.

What we have to do for Swami is so clear now. We need not struggle, suffer and undergo pain for Him. It is the complete opposite infact. We need to be cheerful, joyous and spread that to everyone. We have to serve and bring comfort. We have to make our hearts a fertile bed of good feelings. We have to pray “Samastha Lokaha Sukhino Bhavanthu” as we await the dawn if wisdom in our hearts.

This is what Swami has been telling us through the ages as different avatars and for more than 70 years in this lifetime now. A single event like this has got the whole world into prayer. Our own problems and worries seem so insignificant now. (And that is how they have always been though we felt them to be huge burdens.) Swami has been trying to convince us of these Truths. We don’t seem to be listening and Swami seems to be ready to go to any extent to get us to understand and put into practise.

Its time we assure Him that we understand and that we shall pray and spread love and cheer. Swami’s heart is nothing but our heart. And a pacemaker there implies that we too have to spped up in the heart deparment.
