Youcan use Word document templates to design resumes, create business invoices, customize annual calendars, and more. You can make your own Word document templates from scratch. Create documents that fit your exact needs since the options are limitless when using Word. If you don't know how to begin, you can also edit existing templates and customize them so that their content, colors, fonts, and media are curated for you.


Just click on the very last label or card on the existing template page. Hit tab. You might have to hit a couple times, but it only took once for me. It will create a brand new black label page, no problem!


I'm trying to set up a Word template to force users to save their file as a new Word document instead of overwriting the template file, but not having any luck in getting it to work. I've attached a screenshot of what I set up under preferences > save. Does anyone have any idea what I'm missing?


The secret is to save templates as templates, not documents. Open your "template" and select Save As... Choose Save As Type Word Template (.dotx, rather than the standard .docx). Word likes to relocate templates to default template folders, so be sure to check the folder into which it will be saved.


Unfortunately this isn't working the way its supposed to. I saved the files as a dotx file but instead of forcing a resave, it will overwrite the template file. If I mark the file as read-only, it forces it that way, but just saving it as a template doesn't do it.


How are you accessing your .dotx files? Are you going to Word > File > Open...? If so, that's your edit mode. If you choose New instead of Open, then select Personal rather than Office, you should be able to use templates instead of editing them.


@GREENCREST I have found that the secret is in how you open the Template. If you go to File:Open you are working in edit mode on the template itself. If you double click on the closed Template, then it will force you to save as a new document.


@Badearth5 It would be very nice if the double click worked as it used to and actually opened a new document, or if a right click brought up 'New' as an option, but lately the double click only opens the template (and if you don't check the small print at the top of the screen you may not notice it's .dotx) and right-clicking gives a menu with no 'New' option unless you go down to 'Other' where it is now hidden away. I've complained about this before, including sending in screenshots; there seemed to be a temporary fix, but now it's reverted. In what possible world do people want to edit a template more often than they create a new document from it?


If you frequently create a certain type of document, such as a monthly report, a sales forecast, or a presentation with a company logo, save it as a template so you can use that as your starting point instead of recreating the file from scratch each time you need it. Start with a document that you already created, a document you downloaded, or a new Microsoft template you customized.


If you made templates in an earlier version of Office, you can still use them in Office 2013 and 2016. The first step is to move them into the Custom Office Templates folder so your application can find them. To move your templates quickly, use the Fix it tool.


To add a placeholder for text, picture, chart, and other objects, in the thumbnail pane, click the slide layout that you want to hold the placeholder. From Insert Placeholder, pick the type of placeholder you want to add, and drag to draw the placeholder size.


If you think of your current document as a template, you can save it with a different name to create a new document that's based on the current one. Whenever you want to create a document like that, you'll open your document in Word for the web, go to File > Save As, and create a document that's a copy of the one you started with.


From there, create a template. When you go to File > New in the Word desktop application, you'll be able to use your template for new documents. And if you store the documents online, you can edit them in Word for the web.


I advise against replacing or manipulating the new blank document template (Normal.dotm) in Word. It stores some of the customizations that individual users may have made, and therefore it is not a good idea to manipulate or replace that template on users' workstations.


just to add to replacing the "Blank" template. Whenever Microsoft releases updates, they sometimes reach the Normal.dot too, disregarding any company settings, replacing it with MS's settings, despite all IT efforts to prevent that, so I also urge you not to replace Normal.dot.


In my previous company we had, like so many others, different font type, size, spacing etc. in our Normal.dot, which got always replaced with that horrible Calibri, 1.05 spacing, 8pt after settings when Microsoft released some updates.
