Hi All!
Last week I went to the UMDNJ sponsored South Asian Health
Conference. The purpose of which was to find out the status of
reseach and hopefully charge for what needs to be done.
I met a few very interesting people and gave them the presentation of
our project and they were impressed, hopeful and skeptical (all of
it).
You can call me for details, I will only include brief summary of the conference.
The people I met:
Dr. Jay Jayasankar - an orthopedist from Boston, former AAPI president and very knowledgable, resourceful person
Dr. Rohit Arora - former UMDNJ Cardiologist, now in Chicago, interested
in Cardiovascular research, someone who is starting a project (didn't
get details).
Couple of member of Board of Directors of South Asian Public Health
Association - an association committed to public health issues
(awareness, policy advocacy etc.).
Some local contacts include:
Dr. Gopala Kovvali@CINJ who has started a non profit organization
focused on Research on Cancers among Asian American.
(FRCAA).
There are a few people that I did not get a chance to talk to.
The things that were talked about:
Overall, everyone agreed that DATA IS MISSING. We just don't have
the informaton as to what are the risk factors, what are the needs of
the community. Good studies are missing.
Everyone thought that much needs to be done, but no specifics were
discussed. (this is where I think we can make a big difference).
Other issues: Diabetes (UMDNJ/Newark;s Dr. Raghuwansi was the speaker);
Oral cancer, mental health, diet were all discussed.
Conclusion;
- it was apparent to me that what we have come up with is a good plan, though a very ambitious plan.
- funding, as everyone has said, will be an issue, but we need to get a
resource database established to show everyone that we can do the work.
What we need to do next:
1. GENERATE A BUSINESS PLAN TO ESTABLISH AND SUSTAIN AN
ORGANIZATION: I need help with this... those who are interested in
helping me, please call me
(609) 275-0672. 2. GET DATABASE
Organized: I am working on this with Kennedy, and an outside person.
In terms of the epidemiological studies: One thing I learned was:
a better way to get the data would be to get NHANES to add a category
of "south Asian' and subgroups in their studies instead of doing
something on our own. But we should still establish what
additional questions will need to be asked.
Another idea: how about a longitudinal study of Physicians?
We need to get involved with Advocacy and Politics. Congress funds a lot of the studies.
