Diwang Pinay (Spirit of the Filipina):  Open House to Celebrate International Women’s Day

Reference: Donna Denina, Vice Chair, Pin@y sa Seattle

Seattle, WA – On Friday March 11 at 7:00 PM, Pin@y sa Seattle will celebrate International Women’s Day in their new home located in the FilSTAR youth center just behind the Filipino Community Center (5733 37th Ave. S).  The Open House will showcase performers and art installations to commemorate 300 years of women’s resistance in the Philippines and 100 years of militant working women worldwide.

A century ago, women textile workers in New York marched the streets in a massive demonstration to demand fair and equal labor rights, the right of suffrage and to put an end to child labor.  In 1910, representatives from the International Labor Movement declared March 8th as International Day of Working Women, later adopted by the UN and became more widely known as International Women’s Day.

Women in the Philippines first marched the streets in commemoration of International Women’s Day in 1971, spearheaded by MAKIBAKA, a militant women’s organization forced to go underground under the fascist dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos.  Today, millions of women organized under the banner of Gabriela, the largest alliance of progressive women’s organizations in the Philippines and abroad, continue to intensify their actions in protest against their discontent over Aquino administration, who just nine months ago, made promises to improve the lives of its people.

From budget cuts to national healthcare and other social services, rise in unemployment, price increases on basic goods, utilities and services, the current situation of Filipinos has not  changed.  Continued militarization in the country to quell the people’s clamor for change further exacerbates the ongoing human rights violations already rampant in the country.

While more and more Filipina women and their families are impoverished, they are forced to migrate overseas in search of work..  These women are often exploited, susceptible to violence and even death, with very little support from the Philippine government.  As part of Pinay’s ongoing mission to advocate for the rights and welfare of Filipinas, a new research project is being launched known as the Migranteng Kababaihan Project (Migrant Women) to assess the needs of 500 Filipina immigrant women and girls in the Seattle/King County area.
