Folks

En route to my favourite bakery on Jetty Rd, Brighton, I noticed a shop called "Goggleman", so I went in and asked about the prescription sports eyewear they stock.

They've got heaps of stuff and, more importantly, can tint and match any prescription glasses that you have. They have polaroid & non-polaroid shades and I'm definitely going to get myself fitted out. Their advertising material states -

"Goggleman is Australia's leading supplier of prescription sports eyewear. We are qualified Optical Mechanics and registered Optical Dispensers, supplying specific-purpose prescription eyewear since 2002".

"We specialise in supplying those 'hard to find' products for a wide range of pursuits (sporting or not) which are not readily available through traditional optical outlets. We use the very latest in lens technologies and manufacturing processes and can customise and produce a wide range of prescriptions to suit all needs. Even for those with high prescriptions".

"Goggleman is a Registered Australian Medical Benefits Provider. Any prescription eyewear that you purchase through us is claimable through your Australian Private Health Insurance, just like a regular pair of spectacles"!

Contact details are -

David Aulert - Director
Narold Gent - Optical Dispenser

1/495 Brighton Rd
BRIGHTON  SA  5048
Tel: (08) 8298 1462

I've mentioned SAHGA, so if enough of us are interested they may offer us a discount! I've not approached them on the subject, but if enough of you are interested, I will do so.

Cheers

THat's excellent. My prescription has just gone over the maximum
curvature for my sunny lenses and less curved fittings aren't close
enough for flying. Perfect timing! :-)

Helen I found a local manufacturer in Lonsdale called Cummings Optical. He makes lenses on sight and sells lots of different frames. I have an old Ray Ban frame that I like. I asked the Norwood glasses people, after the two yearly visit to the optometrist, how much for new lenses to the new script for the old frame. They said $330. Cummings did them for $160.

So you go to the optometrist for a script and on the way out, the frame sellers pounce and flog you super expensive frames and you think there is no alternative. I just ask for my script print-out and walk out.

I did it firstly for work glasses and they are really good hardened wrap arounds that cost my employer $36,(I work under dirty big pieces of cast iron and stuff used to get behind my old glasses). I asked Graham (Cummings Optical) to do my Ray Bans. All my lenses are now hardened right through instead of a coating which, after a time, starts to look like oil on water.

Local lens maker. Reasonable price. Make dive goggles, specialist eye ware, Graham travels so he can often come to you. And he is a really nice bloke. There is an alternative to boutique. I don't like to stick my head up to much these days but I was really impressed with Grahams honesty backed up by the out of pocket and I want to help local business. Compare the price folks. The quality is there. Teatime.

Hi Ian

Thanks. Good optometrists are rare and it sounds like your guy is one of
them.

My face is narrow and nearly all wrap around frames are too wide.
Sunny frames come in prescription & non-script forms (script forms allow
for different lenses to be fitted). I gather the prescription affects
the thickness of the lens and the curvature that is limiting before
distortion gets too bad. My optometrist didn't have a suitable frame
but he said, "go out and see what you can find that fits your face, buy
it with a refund policy and I will see if I can make the lenses fit." IE
he doesn't get a penny for the frame (many of which he sells in his
shop). My last script change alas is too thick for my current frames. A
while back I won a 50% discount on Blue-Eyes at a comp but, bugger, the
frames don't fit me:-(. Sounds like both your guy and Mark's may have a
wider range of frames.

The other thing I found out after decades of going to OPSM (I've worn
specs since my early teens) is that places like OPSM and Specsavers are
cheap, but they have a very limited range of glass available. It's like
expecting great cuisine at Maccas. The first time about 10 years ago I
went to a good, independent optometrist and got prescription sunnies
specifically for flying (tinted light brown) after getting supposedly
the same ones from OPSM for 4 years, I was absolutely gobsmacked at
just how much better the optical quality was. The same applied to my
normal specs.

If you have extras cover, frames and lenses are covered every 2 years.
