Helo Sahana Developer Community,

I have been doing a deep dive into Sahana history vs the deep dive I was doing before on any recent development or usage and I want to say I very much appreciate your contributions to the disaster response and emergency management communities. I appreciate any input you are all able to provide. Having been involved in other FOSS projects, I know how difficult it can be to maintain things over time.

As someone that has developed 3W/4W+ systems before and that has a passion for information management in disasters, I am very much interested in opinions and general ideas regarding the future of the space.

We have a team of interested stakeholders that are collaborating on Information Management and GIS initiatives as part of Operation Helene Relief in Western North Carolina in response to the hurricane.

What I have been considering over the past few weeks after years of experience with other platforms is a Sahana Eden backend with a Ushahidi public facing view and also integrated with OSM as needed with a KoboToolbox front end if that makes sense. I have been working to develop emergency communications and FOSS options for disaster and emergency management for a number of years and prior to that I was an infrastructure platform and wireless/mesh systems engineer.

Right now we are working with the University of Kentucky and ESRI and rapidly deploying their new Watch Center product, but I personally always have had a focus on systems that are highly scalable and able to essentially run off-grid in the middle of a jungle with no connectivity.

The idea currently is to integrate Watch Center with Sahana Eden as well.

What do you see as the future in the sector regarding information management platforms?

I guess what I'm asking at the root is, how can I help get a whole bunch of developers and interest back into Eden? Because I think it's one of the most promising aspects of a FOSS disaster response and emergency management future.

Kindest Regards,

-Chris
