Finding minimum value of a function

Suppose there is a function f over the Rational Field. Let's assume that f is a function of 4 variables v1,v2,v3,v4. How to find the minimum value of f, when treated as a function of a single variable, for example v1 and the value of v1 at which this minimum occurs.
