Semi-resolved: I was browsing the Sage reference manual, which I get
in a new window when I click "Help" and experimenting in there. That is
where I get the black jmol screens, although everything else works fine
there.
I just discovered that If I work instead in my own notebook in the original Firefox window it works fine.
It looks as if when I'm in the reference manual Jmol thinks it is
rendering the graphics, but the graphics are not being put in the Jmol
window. So it seems to be a bug, but it is not clear to me whose bug
this is -- sage, Jmol, java, or Firefox.

Someone else posted about this but there didn't seem to be a
resolution. Sorry to start a new discussion on the same topic -- I
didn's see how to add to that one.
Using Firefox 2.0.0.14 any 3d plot in the notebook interface just
gives a black square with jmol in the bottom right corner.
Plots work fine from the terminal interface to sage.
Samples on the jmol web site work fine in firefox.
