Hi,

I have attempted to install SageMath 8.5 on a 153.1 GHz Intel Core i7 16GB 2017 MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.14.2

  1. First the App version via DMG. This caused my MacBook Pro to restart while attempting to open the .DMG
  2. Second via the Terminal version via .tar.bz2. This generated the arched crash log when attempting to launch via the Terminal

Regards,

I have roughly the same system as you, with 10.14.2. I have successfully installed the 8.5 “.app” from the DMG without issue (although I can’t seem to start sage in a terminal window).

I have yet to install from the tarball, but it sounds like you unpacked the tarball and then tried to run “./sage”. Is that correct? If so, that does not work, because the tarball contains only source. To use it, you have to first build it, which, AFAIR, takes about 1-2 hours if you include testing. It also requires you to have the Xcode command-line tools installed.

If you are not up for building from scratch, there should be a .dmg of a pre-built 8.5 version for 10.14 at the same place you got the .app version. That may work better for you.

If some of that is unclear, or you want more pointers/info, reply back. There is also information available on the sagemath website.

Thats odd, opening the dmg is just a mac os function. No Sage code is involved.... Did you verify the md5 of the download? Should be 83ab86f75be7b07e55e103cec318e80f and c6eea704d4d607a65b40bc04061f3cda, respectively. They are on http://files.sagemath.org/osx/intel/index.html

The tarball http://files.sagemath.org/osx/intel/sage-8.5-OSX_10.14.2-x86_64.tar.bz2
does contain binaries, it's just the non-hispter way to package
binaries in this case ;-)

Our source tarballs are not marked with OSs and their versions.

Same crash - with kernel panic reported - at end of process of process of verifying when opening sage-8.5-OSX_10.14.2-x86_64.app under macOS 10.14.2. Tried downloads from both UW and MIT, with same result.

I've never seen this happen before, even when opening/verifying MUCH larger dmg's (e.g., for Mathematica).

Re my previous message that I had the same crash (in fact, causing a kernel panic) at tend of .dmg's verification by macOS 10.14.2: I _did_ check the md5 checksum, and it was OK.

I "solved" this issue finally by disabling my Intego VirusScan and then opened the .dmg.app again. The verification process proceeded without incident. Scanned the resulting .app with ClamXAV: seems OK. Was able then to open the app and use it.

But _something_ is odd about the .dmg's for this new version of Sage. The interference with VirusScan (if that's actually what caused the problem) has never occurred with earlier versions of Sage or with a host of other downloaded .dmg's, including very large ones (e.g., Mathematica).

Are any of you reporting this crash when opening the 8.5 .dmg also, like me, using Intego's VirusBarrier?
