Hi.

The online meeting last week has been quite productive. We managed to
close a few tickets and had some good discussions about some of the
arithmetics of p-adic elements, in particular about the right definition
of the operator % for p-adic elements. (There are now plans to switch
the current implementation from (3) to (4) as described here
https://github.com/sagemath/sage/blob/master/src/sage/rings/padics/padic_generic_element.pyx#L414
to get more precision from that operator.)

We would like to meet again in the IRC chatroom #sagemath (instructions
here http://www.sagemath.org/help-irc.html) on

Tuesday 2016/11/29
at 4pm Eastern / 10pm CET (in much of Europe.)

The idea is again to work on p-adics in Sage and exchange and discuss
anything related to that.

Looking forward to seeing many of you on Tuesday!

julian

PS: The time was chosen so that it worked for the people who attended
last time. If you would like to join the next meeting but can not make
it at that time or that day of the week, let us know and we'll try to
come up with a different schedule.

Hi p-adic enthusiasts,
Julian, Xavier and I are gathering again to work on p-adics; anyone is welcome.  Last week, we worked on the following:
* tracking down code for a new floating point type that I wrote in the spring and adding it to #20348
* working on prerequisite tickets for Julian's new valuations code: #21879, #19820, #21995, #22001
* opened a new ticket to change the behavior of the % operator for p-adic integral elements, after deprecation: #21994
* adding some documentation for lifting from the residue field: #8181
* fixing a bug in any_root for polynomials over finite fields: #21998

Feel free to join us this week on IRC!
David

Hi,

I had lunch with David Roe yesterday and we talked about Sage Days.
If there's sufficient interest, I'm interested in funding a p-adic
Sage Days. Who is interested?

In principle I'm interested, but it would depend on the time and place.

I'm interested and happy to help organize.  When I spoke to William yesterday, the place was flexible and the only requirement on time was that it was before September.

This is surely too short notice to be useful, but: I am supposed to be
in Vancouver February 20-21 and it would be easy for me to spend the
preceding weekend in Seattle.

Or, if everyone wants to converge on San Diego, I can probably help with
that regardless of the dates (unless we hit a week when I'm out of town).

I will be in Seattle then, and those dates would definitely work for me.

I'm also interested in a Sage Days in San Diego (an "SD in SD").

Hi everyone,

I am always interested by p-adic Sage Days.
I have a few new p-adic and tropical Gröbner bases packages that are close to completion. A p-adic Sage Days would definitely help to complete and submit them.

Of course, it would depend a little on time, venue and funding (February is not the best for me).

Univ of Washington's Spring Break is Mar 18-26, 2017; it's very easy
to organize Sage Days that take place on campus then, since most
classrooms are empty, and the weather is also very nice here then. I
have nothing planned during March 18-26.

Kiran -- when is UCSD's spring break? I bet you're traveling then though...

I would also be interested in attending. I'm traveling a lot already, so
it may be difficult to fit me in though (for instance, the spring break
period is already full for me); certainly holding it in the summer would
be easier for me, but if that doesn't work out, that's fine.

Best,

Rob

The summer is fully possible -- basically anytime between today and
Sept 1, 2017, pretty much anywhere in the US -- is possible. It would
be great if you could come.

The first question: who is willing to do the tedious work of
organizing, by which I mean choosing a date, scheduling participants,
etc.?

I would personally rather not do the tedious work of organizing,
though I'll be on the committee (since I'm funding).

I'd be interested in attending if this is held some time during the summer.

I could also help organize.

I'm also in favor of summer, and am happy to help organize.

I'll send out a survey about dates once I have WiFi for my laptop.

If you'd like to come, please fill out this poll by next Friday (Jan 6) so that we can gather data about dates.  The conference won't necessarily be Monday to Friday; I just put those days in to get a rough idea.  Feel free to use the "OK if necessary" option to indicate either that you could only make part of the week or that you could make that week but would prefer another time.
