I am interested in project 6 "Implement representations of Lie algebras and quantum groups" and project 7 "Implement KLR algebras and their representations". Both of these projects require "Foundations in algebra and representation theory" as a prerequisite. I have read parts of the Fulton-Harris book, but not all of it. I want to know which chapters of this book (or some other book) are required knowledge for these projects.

Thank you,
Aditya Padiyar

Dear Aditya,
For Lie algebra representations, the most relevant chapters of Fulton-Harris are the latter ones that focus on that topic. It does not contain any content regarding quantum groups and KLR algebras. These projects will likely require some additional general representation theoretical constructions that are not described in much detail there as I recall, such as Hopf algebra structures.

Best,
Travis

Is it possible to have a more detailed and specific description of what is to be done in project 6? I know contributors have to come up with their own proposals, but I'd appreciate a more elaborate description of what it means to construct a "general framework for the representations of these algebraic objects". Essentially it'd be nice to know what you have in mind for this project.

Thanks,
Aditya

Dear Aditya,
It is exactly what it says: the project idea is to develop a general framework (for example, but not limited to, an ABC hierarchy) for handling, e.g., Lie algebra representation. As you said, it is the contributor who is responsible for designing the proposal. While I can provide feedback on a given proposal, it is your project to propose.

Since AI-generated “slop” is increasing in GSoC applications, how do you plan to tackle it as a mentor? What methods will you use to ensure contributors actually understand and write the code rather than relying heavily on AI-generated output?

First, this topic should be on a new thread as it is not related to this one. That said, we do not share our internal selection processes (which would happen before a project is accepted and a mentor is officially appointed), but do remember that mentors are subject matter experts. Lastly, for all contributors (meaning their proposal has been accepted and are given a slot), they are required to make meaningful advances towards in their projects or they will be failed as in all previous years.

Best,
Travis
