Hi,

I am Sourish. I am very interested in contributing to SageMath for GSoC 2026, specifically the project 'Improve (free) module implementations'.

I am an engineering student. While my curriculum is not 'pure math', it is heavily focused on linear algebra and numerical methods. I have experience with python and am comfortable with the concepts of vector spaces and modules.
I am currently exploring the sage codebase especially the free modules under combinat and modules section.

I wanted to confirm whether students from engineering backgrounds are encouraged to apply for this refactoring project? Also, if yes, would appreciate any tips or advice regarding this project.

Thank You.
Regards

Dear Sourish,
That project idea is largely a refactoring, and so I think it does not require a deep mathematical background. Likely a software engineering background will be advantageous for developing and being successful in such a project. Please note that some (abstract) mathematical understanding is necessary to understand the structures and possibilities.

Best,
Travis
