Hi there,

I've got some small questions:

- Should foreign nationals of nations participating in the visa waivers
program of the US go for a Visa Waivers Business or Tourist? Some US
conferences/workshops advised to get a VW Business classification since it
was required for reimbursement.

- What is the recommended way of getting from the airport to the
accommodation?

- Shall we just drop by the Collegiana Inn and check-in? Are the rooms booked
under Williams name?

Cheers,
Martin

PS: I touch down in Seattle 8:55 pm 6/11/08 just in case somebody else will
arrive at the same time.

I'll check with the secretary here.

I'll let a student who lives in Seattle answer this.

Collegiana Inn -- despite the name -- is now an apartment complex not a hotel,
so there isn't really a notion of check in, at least not after 6pm.
I will obtain keys for all the rooms, and figure out how to
distribute them -- I don't know yet. Ideas?
My cell phone number is 206-419-0925, by the way.

I like to use public transportation in strange lands, so I'd take a bus. The 194 goes from the airport to downtown, then the 71, 72, or 73 will take you from downtown to the U District. You'll want to get off the 7(1|2|3) at 45th.

For the less adventurous, I hear that airport shuttles are cheaper than taxis. Also, I've never seen a taxicab in Seattle that could be described as "in a hurry", or "slightly faster than my grandmother".

More details on this point:

there are 2 bus lines from the airport to downtown 174 and 194. Resist
to the temptation to get in the 174 if it comes earlier, since it takes
more than 1h to get downtown, whereas 194 uses the highway.

Fares:
* bus : $1.5 (about 1h to campus)
* taxis : around $40 + tip (about 20mins to campus)
* shuttle : around $35 (maybe less if you register online before arriving)

Therefore I do not recommend the shuttle, since they may ask you to wait
quite a while before the shuttle is full, and it is not that much
cheaper than a taxi.

Ah, I remember now. But according to

http://transit.metrokc.gov/tops/bus/schedules/s194_0_.html

the buses don't run very late.

A shuttle from the airport to the UW area is roughly 36 dollars plus or
minus a few dollars depending on exactly where you are going. If you are
alone its cheaper than a taxi. If there are multiple people a taxi is
around 50-60 bucks I believe so if you can split it, it might be cheaper.

WRT buses, I suggest trying www.google.com/transit for public
transportation info. I see they have many cities now; Seattle was one
of the first cities. I used this a lot last year when I was in
Seattle.

E.g. for instructions from the airport to the collegiana inn, try this
link:

http://www.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=tacoma+airport,+seattle&daddr=4311+12th+Ave.+NE,+seattle&dirflg=r&date=6%2F14%2F08&time=9:40am&ttype=dep&sll=47.55091,-122.30195&sspn=0.255819,0.628281&ie=UTF8&z=11&start=0

This is for 9:40am, saturday 14 (my arrival time).

Best, Gonzalo

Any ideas come along?

If not:

I suppose that it would be easier for the first person to arrive to do
the actual distribution (and post a cell number for that purpose). I'm
fine with not strolling too far off and distributing the keys after I
arrive, but Martin Albrecht seem to arrive before I do.

I'm landing at 2:10 pm the 12th, so I suppose I'll want to "check in"
sometimes between 4 and 7 pm.

That doesn't address getting the keys to that first someone of course.

I'll call around after I landed for someone with the keys. AFAIK Michael
Abshoff is already staying there, so a set of keys must be somewhere in the U
district. I can't post my mobile number here since (1) I'm not sure my mobile
will work on the other side of the big pond and (2) it would cost you an
international call to call it.

Yes, same issue with a cell phone on my end. I am discussing with
William what to do and it would certainly help if we know who was
coming when. I can pick up all the room keys and so on and there is a
phone in the rooms where people would be able to call me locally.

I will post some more suggestions here once we have things sorted out,
i.e. hopefully today.

Besides attempting to call William on the number he already posted in
this thread you can also attempt to call

206-732-3301

which is the number in my apartment. I will likely have the key cards
to the rooms and if you arrive late it will probably be easiest to let
me know when you are roughly coming in and then call me at that
number. IRC is also a good place to ping me. It looks like a lot of
people will arrive on the 12th.

I'll be arriving on the 12th. My flight is supposed to land at 9:14
p.m., so I suppose that means I should be arriving around 10:30(?) p.m.

Would it help to add arrival times to the wiki?

Yes, please do. I think Michael will be waiting at the door
for people and/or has posted his phone number at the top.
He will have lots of keys to rooms.

Yes, that would certainly help planning for dinner or whatever else
might happen that day. William, Robert and I and some other people
will be at Boeing until about 4pm or so, so if you arrive during the
day we need to figure something out. In Jonathan's case that will not
be a problem, but it looks like it might be a little tight for Martin
for example.

It sounds like I just got that job :)

I should be available at that phone number that evening and should I
be out and about Gary will likely man the phone and hand out keys to
people who arrive. I am not not so sure about the bus schedule, i.e.
while the 194 seems to be running more or less regularly till late I
ended up taking a cap from downtone to UW/the Inn after waiting for
about 20 minutes for a 7[1|2|3] around 8pm on Saturday. YMMV
obviously, but I ended up paying roughly 15 bucks for the ride from
downtown to the Inn which seemed a reasonable tradeoff after 20+ hours
flying in from Europe.

I'm landing at 2 pm so I'll need to keep this in mind, but if you plan on
heading back afterwards I'll just wait for you, I don't think it will be
that long (I'll take the bus).

Yep, I saw the wiki entry you made and originally it said the 12th.
But I will be in the apartment at that point and as a last resort you
have my mobile number of Germany. Since you are already on the flight
I will assume you won't read it until you get your key, but there is
an open wifi in front of the hotel which one could use to go online :)

Hi Dag,

it looks like 4pm will be the latest we will be back and it looks
likely that we might make it back earlier. Since Martin is coming
today, i.e. the 11th, he might be at the hotel then, so we will see if
somebody else might take over duties from me for a couple hours.

Hi everyone,

I'm scheduled to arrive at Sea-Tac TODAY (meaning 2008-06-12) at
6:37pm. See you guys later!
