Dear all,

I connected on SMC with firefox and noticed that the Jupyter notebook are not supported anymore. What is this due to? Is this likely to be resolved?

This might cause a problem for my class as I am not sure of what are the browsers currently installed by default on the machines. And anyway, it seems to be that it is quite a big problem as firefox is a widely used browser!

Here are the (currently three) open Firefox issues with SMC:

Not only is Firefox + Jupyter disabled in SMC (due to massive corruption it will cause to Jupyter notebooks), but in fact, any time you visit SMC using Firefox for any purpose, there is a big message in the upper right suggesting to using any other browser instead of Firefox.  There are massive performance issues due to (known reported with test cases for over a year) issues with the flex layout implementation in Firefox.

Yes, but I can't tell you when.

During the month of October, before we had an explicitly message saying not to use Firefox, almost 15% of visitors to the SMC website used Firefox.

Now fixed -- you can safely use Jupyter + Firefox again with SMC and sync.

We just spent months rewriting Jupyter from scratch for SMC and the
rewrite is now live! See

http://blog.sagemath.com/jupyter/2017/05/05/jupyter-rewrite-for-smc.html

This is a complete rewrite meant to address all Firefox sync issues, etc.

At the same time, it's compatible (both file format and look and feel)
with the classical Jupyter notebook.
