# News from SageMath, the Sage Mathematics Software System!
## New releases
SageMath 9.0 was released on 2020-01-01.
SageMath 9.1 was released on 2020-05-20.
My apologies for not sending timely announcements.
The source files and binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows
have made their way to the download mirrors.
## Python 3
The big news is that SageMath 9.0 and SageMath 9.1
are primarily based on Python 3. If you download
SageMath for your system from the SageMath website,
you will get a version based on Python 3.
For SageMath 9.0 and SageMath 9.1, it is still possible
to get a version based on Python 2 by building from source.
Starting from SageMath 9.2, SageMath will be Python 3 only,
and there will no longer be a way to build for Python 2.
For more on the switch to Python 3, see:
