to The Long Road
29 Flamerule, Year 342 by Northreckoning
Dawnblade Kao was in Roderick's quarters, which she has recently made
her own, when two of Roderick's traveling companions joined the other
priests and the disciple in the preparatory chambers to make final
preparations of Roderick's remains. The loud Tethyrian was not
present; Amrielle and Kieran said he had family matters to attend
to.
A stranger burst into the temple, and all sped to meet him. This man
looked like he could fit in well in Longsaddle, yet he had an exotic
air about him. He showed signs of a recent battle--one which he
barely survived. After he was settled by healing and prayers, he
revealed that he faced the troll that is troubling this area. This
must be a singularly powerful troll to give such a hardy people such
trouble.
This man--Hansen Maedrin--said he traveled with the Whiteaxe
Adventuring Company, and they were hired by a local mining company to
reclaim a quarry nearby (Kaelm's Quarry is the name, if the disciple's
memory is true.)
Kieran, Amrielle, and Hansen all mustered the courage to face this
foe, and at this time Dawnblade Kao decided to introduce herself. She
insisted on accompanying the group. It is not the disciple's
prerogative to state the Dawnblade's motives--the Dawnblade does as
the Dawnblade and the Morninglord will.
The disciple armored the Dawnblade and joined the group of riders as
all made haste to find the trail of this troll. Corpses of the
Whiteaxe Company were found; the group set about to burning them.
Time did not permit proper burials. The disciple prays the
Morninglord is understanding of the circumstances.
Amrielle proved to be a deft tracker, and soon the party made for the
Rising Rock. After this landmark, all set slightly east and rode
through large boulders. It was here that the troll set his ambush.
It swung a massive iron ball on the end of a chain, nearly ending
Amrielle. The Dawnblade issued orders to the disciple, then moved to
the troll's flank. Amrielle uttered a prayer to Mielikki and set to
trap the troll with conjured vines, putting her back to a boulder as
she did so.
It was at this point that the wholeness of the ambush became clear.
Three orcs--called Grimbones by Amrielle and Kieran--came into view
and joined the fray. They spoke in their foul tongue (which Amrielle
understands) and whooped and howled with glee as they set to stealing
horses. The troll moved through Mielikki's vines with ease and swung
ball and chain at Amrielle.
The Dawnblade addressed the troll with a proper challenge, allowing
the lesser foes to contend with the others. The disciple diligently
set about the field with the healing wand of Lathander, ensuring no
ally would die.
Hansen and the Dawnblade spent the battle cutting at the troll, while
Kieran launched burning spells on it. He was not very focused,
however, as he split his attention on the task at hand and Amrielle's
safety.
The Dawnblade received several poundings from the troll's chain
cudgel, so the disciple set to heal the wounds. The world went black.
As the disciple came to, an acrid smoke hung in the air. The battle
was over. Troll flesh was burning while orc bodies were looted. A
treasure cache was located. Coins and gems for those who value such
things.
